The Meaning Behind Chlöe’s “FYS” Is Actually Pretty Romantic

Chlöe stans, rise. The day has finally come. On Mar. 1, Chlöe released her brand new single “F*** Your Status” and it is so good. “FYS” marks the singer’s latest release since her debut album, In Pieces, was released on March 31, 2023. The album is home to some of her most iconic tracks like “Body Do” and “How Does It Feel.” Following the album’s release, Chloë went on her first solo tour for the album in various parts of the U.S.

“FYS” dropped just three days after the singer teased a snippet of the track on Instagram before announcing its release date on Feb. 28.  In the caption of the snippet post, Chlöe shared the letters “FYS” and asked fans to guess what it meant. Now that the song is out, we finally know what it’s about.

If you also listened to “FYS” first thing when you woke up on Mar. 1, let’s talk about some of those lyrics!

Chlöe opens the song with the lyrics: “Love me, love me, love me” four times. Seems like she’s really setting the scene for the vibe of the song from the beginning. In the first verse, it seems like Chlöe is getting pretty detailed about what she likes (wink wink). IYKYK.

Chlöe then throws in some slang that’s been hard to miss on social media over the past few months. She sings, “I know that you in love with the gyat (With the gyat).” If you don’t know what this means, allow me to fill you in a bit. “Gyat,” according to Genius, is a slang term popularized by Youtuber and Twitch streamer, Kai Cenat. Basically, it means big a**. TBH, this lyric is iconic of her.

Let’s jump to the pre-chorus. Essentially, Chlöe sings about getting ready to take things to the next level: “Just tell me what you want and I’ll give it to you,” and “You can let it go in the bedroom, babe.” Then, she jumps into the chorus, which is where things get really interesting.

In the chorus, Chlöe introduces the lyrics to the title of the track. She sings, “F*** your status, / F*** your, your status it don’t matter.” According to Genius, Chlöe was inspired to to write the song “when she was talking to a guy and realized that she liked him for who he was and not his material possessions, money, and status.” And that’s abundantly clear in the following lyrics. She sings, “Money, cars, and the diamonds / Don’t faze me, I been had it / F*** your status / I just, just wanna love you baby, / What you wanna do?”

On an Instagram Live on Feb. 29, Chlöe shared some more information about the song and what it means to her. “It wasn’t their status or what they had that attracted them to me, it was who they are as a person,” she explained. “‘I think because of me and what I do… I feel like a lot of people think that is what I care about, but it’s not.’”

It’s honestly so refreshing to see an artist being transparent about what people expect them to want in a partner. But, Chlöe is here to show that your status doesn’t matter because as long as there’s a connection, that’s what’s most important.

In the live, she shared, “I wrote this song to be like ‘f*ck your status,’ it doesn’t matter because I have this on my own. So you having cars and you having money it doesn’t really matter… I just want to love you.”

Essentially, this “FYS” is “about loving someone for who they are and not what they have or can give you monetarily wise.” I love how real she is.
