I’m calling it now: The Daisy Jones & the Six series (based on the book by Taylor Jenkins Reid) is going to be the next big TV show. While there isn’t yet a trailer or a release date, we do know that the miniseries is set to hit Amazon Prime Video soon. If you think Daisy Jones & the Six may be a candidate for your next binge watch, stick around for a series rundown, a cast list of who’s who, and some more information about the book and author who started it all.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Reid emphasized how important it was to write about and celebrate the importance of women’s voices in music. Given rock music’s sexist history, Daisy Jones & the Six provides a fresh take on the male-dominated music industry and a great story for Women’s History Month. But with some pretty impressive women both on camera and calling the shots off camera, who’s surprised? Read on for everything you need to know about your next favorite series.
The story of Daisy Jones & the Six is fiction, but is based on a real band.
Loosely based on the true story of real-life legendary rock band Fleetwood Mac, Daisy Jones & the Six takes place in 1970s L.A., and is an adaptation of the 2019 novel of the same name by Taylor Jenkins Reid (more on that later). It follows aspiring singer Daisy Jones as she joins Billy Dunne’s fictional band The Six to make an album. What happens next is the band’s cosmic rise, which only leads to their messy and dramatic breakup. So, if you’re a Fleetwood Mac stan, have a penchant for vintage content, or just love fictional celebrity culture, I’d say put this one on your list.
Is there a trailer or release date for the series yet?
Unfortunately, there’s been no word from Amazon yet on when the show is coming out, or when the trailer will drop. When there is more information, we’ll update this piece to include it so you don’t miss out on any new developments.
The cast includes some familiar faces, like Sam Claflin from The Hunger Games.
If the engaging plot still isn’t enough to hook you, Daisy Jones & the Six has a pretty stacked cast that might draw your attention. First, actress Riley Keough is set to play the titular Daisy Jones. You may know her from the Magic Mike and Mad Max movies, so she has some acting experience under her belt. However, Keough’s maternal grandfather is Elvis Presley, aka the King of Rock and Roll. While this technically makes her a nepotism baby, you could also say being a rockstar is in her blood, so we have hopes she’ll pull off the part.
Up next is Sam Claflin as the broody and charismatic Billy Dunne. Some of his many credits include The Hunger Games movies as heartthrob Finnick Odair, Me Before You, and Peaky Blinders. Basically, Claflin has the range to handle this leading performance. Billy Dunne’s girlfriend Camilla is also very important to the story, and she will be played by Camila Morrone. While Morrone is mostly known for modeling and being the ex-girlfriend of Leonardo DiCaprio, Daisy Jones is her first major acting credit, so it’ll be exciting to see her test out new waters.
Finally, we have Suki Waterhouse as Karen Sirko, the Six’s only permanent female musician. Her acting credits include Love, Rosie (alongside Claflin) and A Rainy Day in New York. Like Morrone, she’s primarily known as a model. She has also been dating Robert Pattinson since 2018.
The show will also serve as the debut for some new actors to watch.
The cast of Daisy Jones & the Six also features some promising new actors that you’ll be able to say you discovered first. Nabiyah Be plays Simone Jackson, Daisy Jones’s best friend and fellow singer. Will Harrison will be starring as Graham Dunne, brother of the previously mentioned Billy Dunne and fellow bandmate of the Six. Finally, Sebastian Chacon rounds out the band as drummer Warren Rhodes.
Reid, who authored the original novel, shouted out most of the new cast members on her Instagram as they were announced. So if the story creator herself is pumped, you can be assured these casting choices are the right ones.
The OG book has one pretty famous reader.
For you bookworms out there who also happen to be looking for your next read along with your next binge, you can go ahead and kill two birds with one stone with Daisy Jones & the Six. As mentioned earlier, the series is based on a book by author Taylor Jenkins Reid. Reid is a popular and prolific writer, particularly in the romance genre, and those of you on BookTok may already be familiar with her work. Along with Daisy Jones, Reid’s other books The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and Malibu Rising frequently make the rounds.
Daisy Jones & the Six also has some pretty high-profile fans. It was famously the February 2019 pick for Reese Witherspoon’s book club, and Witherspoon also happens to be co-producing the series via her media company, Hello Sunshine. Part of what makes the book unique is that rather than traditional prose, it’s told in the style of an oral interview. Jenkins Reid also wrote lyrics for a whole album’s worth of Daisy Jones and the Six songs that she includes in the back of the book, and yes, the show officially will be scoring the songs!
If you love music, Los Angeles, Sam Claflin, or just consider yourself an old soul, then sit tight because Daisy Jones & the Six is coming. I have high hopes for the show, but the English major in me implores you to try and squeeze in the book first before the series premieres.
