Demi Lovato has had a tumultuous past: she suffered from an eating disorder, was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, and endured substance addiction. But she’s come out on top, taking herself out of seriously bad situations. On Thursday, the mental health advocate took to Twitter to announce a major milestone in her recovery—being six years sober!
Today is a very special day for me… I’m officially celebrating 6 years of sobriety!! I’m so thankful to my family, friends and @castcenters for being a part of this journey. A huge part of my recovery was learning to love myself and to give back to others.

Demi has been very vocal about her struggles, which in recent years she’s even tied it into her performances. During her shows, she takes a moment to discuss her struggle, and the struggle of others also battling with their mental health. Demi even holds workshops before her shows that allow attendees the opportunity to discuss their own mental health or have a better understanding of someone else’s suffering.
As someone who suffers from mental health issues, it’s inspiring to see someone like Demi be so vocal about seeking help, and knowing that it’s okay to do so. I sometimes feel like a proud friend watching her flourish, and create goals and reach them. Demi Lovato is an inspiration to anyone who is looking to create a healthy and bountiful life, despite the obstacles they have faced.
6 down, Demi! You’ve got this.
