Demi Lovato Used Selena Gomez Lyrics in an Instagram Caption, & No One Knows What It Means

Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez’s friendship has been a talking point for years, and Demi just resurrected the frenzy with an Instagram caption that may or may not be a reference to Selena’s hit, “Kill Em With Kindness.”

Demi’s Instagram caption reads, “Kill em with kindness…. or choke em with a smile on your face.” This is clearly a different spin on the otherwise cutesy expression.

Kill em with kindness…. or choke em with a smile on your face.

Given that the picture doesn’t seem to have anything to do with Selena, it’s highly likely that Demi was just quoting the common saying, not Selena’s song. But that didn’t stop fans from commenting up a storm. Many followers revived their old friendship name (Delena) with comments like “Let delena live pls” and “#DELENA.” Others straight-up asked, “Does this have something to do with sel?”

Why the obsession? Demi and Selena have had a long on-and-off friendship that dates all the way back to when they acted on Barney and Friends together before becoming Disney Channel stars. At one point, they were total BFFs, but over the years, their friendship has been rocky and their fans have even feuded. Back in the day, the singers vlogged with each other on YouTube, co-starred in Princess Protection Program and had songs “One and the Same” and “Send It On” together. However, they seemed to grow apart as they aged, moving on in their careers and personal lives (ahem, Selena befriending Taylor Swift), which is totally normal and fine.

Whatever the thought process behind Demi’s caption was, it’s probably not worth worrying about. We can always secretly hope for Princess Protection Program 2, though.
