My jaw dropped when I saw Gigi Hadid trending this morning — not for her looks, but because authorities arrested her in the Cayman Islands last week. (Her Campus reached out to Hadid’s team for comment on the arrest, but did not hear back by the time of publication.) I don’t know about you, but when I think of the Hadids, I see them strutting down a catwalk and picture them dressed to the nines. I don’t think mugshots. The older Hadid sibling behind bars? That makes zero sense to me. So what happened to Miss Hadid? A peek at her Instagram suggests it was nothing serious enough to ruin her island getaway.
Why was Hadid arrested?
Turns out, on a trip to the Cayman Islands on July 10, private plane officials reportedly searched Hadid and her friends’s luggage. A local news outlet reported customs found “ganja and utensils used for the consumption of ganja.” Hadid was held at Royal Cayman Islands Detention Center, but let out on bail quickly, according to TMZ.
In the end, Miss Gigi pled guilty to marijuana possession on July 12 and paid a $1,000 fine, according to Rolling Stone. But, luckily, she didn’t receive a mark on her record. “Gigi was traveling with marijuana purchased legally in NYC with a medical license,” Hadid’s rep told Rolling Stone. “It has also been legal for medical use in Grand Cayman since 2017. Her record remains clear, and she enjoyed the rest of her time on the island.”
Hadid posted to Instagram quickly after the news of her arrest.
It certainly seems her rep told the truth about Hadid going on to have a great vacay. So much so, it looks like Hadid might’ve referenced the arrest in a recent Instagram post. After the news of her arrest broke, Hadid shared pics from the trip and captioned the carousel, “All’s well that ends well.” As many fans noted in her comments section, the caption might be a subtle nod to her arrest and how she’s remained unbothered.
Who was on the trip with Hadid?
The model was on a trip with her friends Alana O’Herlihy, Leah McCarthy, and Patrick Dooley. O’Herlihy is a photographer who shot Hadid’s February Vogue cover. McCarthy has been Hadid’s BFF since the beginning, and an influencer for ages. Dooley happens to be a friend and the membership manager at Palm Heights, the hotel where Hadid was staying.
And for anyone wondering, Hadid wasn’t the only one arrested. McCarthy also was reportedly found to have a “relatively small” amount of marijuana in her possession and booked with the same charges as her friend. She also reportedly paid a $1,000 fine and made it back to the U.S. with no mark on her record.
The best part of it all was how totally unaware fans were. Like, just hours before the news broke that Hadid was arrested, Vogue posted an article about how to get Hadid’s “Hot Girl Summer Hair,” and I thought that would be the biggest story to come out of her Cayman Islands trip. Looks like I was wrong.
