Good Trouble fans, rejoice! Freeform’s spinoff series of The Fosters releases Part 2 of Season 5 on Jan. 2 — and I’m ready for it. Airing in 2019, the show follows adopted sisters Callie Adams Foster (played by Maia Mitchell) and Mariana Adams Foster (played by Cierra Ramirez), in their first adults adventures in Los Angeles.
In the show, Mariana works to find her place in the tech world, while Callie realizes how harsh the legal system truly is. The sisters move to the Coterie in downtown LA and experience typical twenty-something struggles with new jobs, new roommates, and new love interests all while in a new city.Â
The Part 1 finale aired on May 18, 2023, so it’s been quite a bit since we last saw Callie and Mariana. So if you’re a fan of the show and need a refresher, here’s the Season 5, Part 1 recap of Good Trouble — so you can be caught up when the newest installment drops. Spoiler warning: Spoilers for Season 5, Part 1 of Good Trouble follow.
The fifth season of Good Trouble kicked off with a drama-filled first part. While fleeing the compound of Silas’s farm, Evan is shot in the chest leaving him in a medically induced coma. Mariana sits at his bedside feeling immense guilt that she is to blame. And she only feels worse when Evan’s lawyer shares that he made her a proxy, meaning she is now acting CEO of Spekulate, with no guidance from Evan. Maia Mitchell returns as her role Callie, to support a crumbling Mariana, who is struggling with almost losing Evan plus the drastic changes his coma brings to his life.Â
Throughout the season seemingly every character struggles. Luca has issues at the dance school that affect his confidence while Dennis struggles financially and Joaquin blames himself for a tragedy. Mariana goes on to experience panic attacks and flashbacks as Silas’ presence begins to show back up. She spends her time fighting off layoffs as CEO and trying her best to do what Evan would want. But, when Evan wakes up from his coma, he has no memory of Mariana and simply goes back to work at Spekulate during the season finale. In a pivotal scene, Mariana and Joaquin almost kiss, but don’t — forcing her to return to the Coterie alone.Â
The brightest part of the season was Callie and Jamie’s engagement which was revealed during a big Thanksgiving dinner after she had kept the engagement secret before thanking her fiance for teaching her to trust in love, and hopefully this means there is a Good Trouble wedding on the horizon.Â
What will be revealed in the first episode of Good Trouble Season 5 Part 2? You can find out starting on Jan. 2 — I’ll be right there with you!
