Have you ever wondered what the stars of MTV Awkward really think and feel? Her Campus was able to get the inside scoop and we came to find that they’re really a lot like us! Take a look at our exclusive interview to get some details on the current season and even see how Jillian can relate to her character, Tamara, in real life.
Her Campus: What are you most excited about for season two?
Jillian Rose Reed: Throughout the whole season the thing that I’m most excited for is all of the boy drama unraveling—because there’s so much going on this season with the love triangle between Maddy and Jake and Jenna—I’m really excited for fans to see where that goes.
HC: What else can they expect besides the boy drama?
JRR: There’s a lot going on this season. There’s things going on with my character and Sadie’s character and our storylines intertwine a little bit—we get to have a couple different things with each other. And there’s also the storyline of Jenna’s mom who wrote the letter to Jenna from last season and so her whole family is dealing with how they’re reacting to the letter and finding out that it was Lacy—so there’s that drama too. This season just has a lot of stuff going on!
HC: How do you think you relate to your character, Tamara, in real life?
JRR: Well we both talk really fast! I think that’s probably the biggest similarity between us. But Tamara is the funny, sassy, loving best friend and I feel like I’m definitely like that. I can be sort of sassy sometimes too, so we definitely relate to each other.
HC: Does your character talk really fast because that’s what you do or because that’s what she was supposed to do?
JRR: I think it’s a little bit of both. It’s something that I brought to the character because I thought it was something that Tamara would do. Over the course of two seasons of becoming her character I think people started noticing that it wasn’t too hard for me to do because I do it in real life too.
HC: Has any event in real life really prepared you for this role?
JRR: High school in general has prepared me for this role. Speaking on behalf of the cast we all went to normal high schools so we all went through all of the embarrassing stuff that we have to reenact. So we’re at a high school and we’re filming all of these scenes and it feels really surreal for us because we’ve been there. We’ve had some of the same moments that we’re having to film and going through those weird teenage years has definitely helped us all be able to get into these characters.
HC: What’s a question that fans like to ask you?
JRR: I’m always asked if I’m Team Jake or Team Matty—which is a question that I understand why they always ask, but I never know the answer to! I always say that I’m Team Jatty, which is a mixture between the both of them, because I think that they’re both wonderful. People get annoyed because I never pick a team, but I really can’t!
HC: What about your favorite scene ever to film?
JRR: My favorite scene aired earlier in this season of Awkward. I had to do this dance sequence in this spandex unitard—so I looked ridiculous. But I got to bring a lot of physical comedy, which is my favorite thing to do, so that has to be my absolute favorite scene I’ve ever done!
HC: What do you enjoy most about being able to work with the cast?
JRR: We’re like a big family so there’s not even one specific thing that I love the most. We all get along so well and we’re always laughing and just having the most fun on set. I just think the best part of it is that there’s no drama—we’re just all close.
HC: Where do you see your future self?
JRR: I’d love to see myself on a sitcom! Something like a long-running sitcom like Friends or Seinfeld—something that was just loved by so many people and runs for a long period of time. I’d love to take a character from beginning to end!
