HC Wake-Up Call: Judge Orders Temporary Stop of Family Deportations, Lava Bomb Injures 23 in Hawaii & Trump Baby Might Be Coming to the U.S.

Good morning, Her Campus! With a break-neck news cycle, there is no possible way for you to stay on top of every story that comes across your feeds—we’re all only human, after all.

But, life comes at you fast. So grab a cup of coffee and settle in for this quick and dirty guide to stories you might’ve been sleeping on (like, literally. It’s early.)

Federal Judge Orders Government to Temporarily Stop Family Deportations

A federal judge has ordered the Trump administration to temporary halt the deportation of immigrant families for at least a week after reuniting them.

According to The Huffington Post, the Trump administration is currently working to reunite approximately 2,500 immigrant children who were separated from their parents at the border, mainly due to the zero tolerance policy that was in place. A government official said in court on Monday that the government is still working looking for the parents of 71 of those children.

Last month, Judge Dana Sabraw order the government to reunite children under the age of five with their families by July 10, and children five years and older by July 26. Sabraw said the reunifications still need to happen as quickly as possible, but there would be a temporary halt on the deportation of reunited families.

Deportations of the reunited families will be halted for at least a week.

The American Civil Liberties Union, which is representing the families, asked the judge to not deport the families for at least a week “given the persistent and increasing rumors – which [the government has] refused to deny – that mass deportations may be carried out imminently and immediately upon reunification.”

Government attorney Sarah Fabian said there could be a chance that this order would delay reunifications since due to space limitations, but the judge rejected the argument, stating that if there is a lack of space, the government will need to find a way to remedy it.

Lava Bomb Injures 23 People On Tour Boat in Hawaii

A lava bomb crashed through the roof of a tour boat on Monday, injuring 23 people near where lava continues to flow into the ocean from the Kilauea volcano in Hawaii, ABC News reports.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a lava bomb is a large rock projected in a volcanic explosion. The lava bomb that struck the tour boat was the size of a basketball.

Four passengers on the boat were transported to Hilo Medical Center by ambulance. One of those passengers is listed in serious condition with a fractured femur, ABC News reports.

Other injured passengers drive themselves to the hospital, according to the Hawaii County Fire Department, but only had superficial injuries.

The continued lava flow into the ocean from the volcano has created a new lava “island” just off the shore line.

Lava flow has continued to destroy building and infrastructure, including the Kua O Ka La Charter School, which was destroyed by the lava last week.

Trump Baby Balloon Might Be Coming to the U.S.

During President Donald Trump’s UK visit last week, the president was met with large protests in London. One of the most notable parts of the protest was the 19-foot “Trump Baby” balloon that floated over London’s Parliament Square Garden, and now it looks like Trump Baby will make its way to the U.S.

According to Hello Giggles, activist Didier Jiminez-Castro from Hillsborough, New Jersey created a GoFundMe page to raise money to bring Trump Baby to America. Jiminez-Castro’s campaign seeks to fly the Trump Baby balloon in Bedminster, New Jersey, which is home to Trump’s National Golf Course.

“I got together with local organizers and we agreed we need to bring Baby Trump to Bedminster where he plays golf on the regular,” Jiminez-Castro wrote on the GoFundMe page. “I contacted the manufacturer and now we are raising money to have one shipped to us. During an interviewed he mention he does not feel welcome with the Baby Trump in display and we need to get under his skin as much as we can.”

The GoFundMe campaign listed a goal of $4,500, but quickly reached $8,000.

“Within 22 hours, we reached our goal,” Jimenez-Castro told the Bridgewater Courier News. “I contacted the manufacturer again and we will have our balloon by mid-August. The order is going in Monday.”

Jiminez-Castro said he will be working with Jim Girvan, chair of the Branchburg Democratic Party and founder of a local anti-Trump group, the People’s Motorcade, to take Trump Baby on a tour of New Jersey, New York and Connecticut, and use it to encourage people to register to vote and get involved in politics.

It looks like Trump Baby will be making a trip across the pond.
