HC Wake-Up Call: SCOTUS Says It Won’t Intervene in Mississippi Gay Rights Legal Fight, U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley Says White House Staff ‘Loves Their President’, & Girl Scout Cookie Season Has Officially Began

Good morning Her Campus! With a break-neck news cycle, there is no possible way for you to stay on top of every story that comes across your feeds—we’re all only human, after all.

But, life comes at you fast. So grab a cup of coffee and settle in for this quick and dirty guide to stories you might’ve been sleeping on (like, literally. It’s early.)

SCOTUS Says It Won’t Intervene in Mississippi Gay Rights Legal Fight

According to ABC News, the Supreme Court has said that it will not be weighing in on the Mississippi law that allows government workers and owners of private businesses to refuse service to the LGBT community based on their religious beliefs.

The justices did not make any remarks as to why they chose to leave in place the federal appeals court ruling, which let the law go into effect.

The law, which was drafted in 2015 and signed into law by Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant, established that a marriage was between a man and a woman, that sex could only occur if the heterosexual couple was married and that a person’s gender is determine at their birth, ABC News reports.

But the legal battle may not be over yet. A federal judge left some room for the law to still be overturned if its challengers can find an individual who was actually harmed by the law, meaning that they had been denied services and now could pursue a legal remedy.

Nikki Haley Says the White House Staff “Loves Their President”

In the aftermath of the Fire and Fury escapade, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley has spoken out, saying that she has never heard anyone call President Trump “unstable,” The New York Post reports.

During ABC’s “This Week”, Haley remarked, “I know those people in the White House. These people love their country and respect our president.
No one questions the [mental] stability of the president.”

Haley added that the White House staff is committed to their jobs and serving the president, otherwise “they wouldn’t be there.”

According to The New York Post, Haley said that she personally had never witnessed a time when she thought that Trump was “unstable.”

“I work with the president and speak with him multiple times a week,” Haley said. “He didn’t become the president by accident, and as much as everyone wants to talk about stability: Was he unstable when he passed the tax reform? Was he unstable when we finally hit back at Syria and said, ‘No more chemical weapons’? Was he unstable when we finally put North Korea on notice?”

In regards to Trump’s “nuclear button” tweet last week, Haley said, “…we’re not letting up on the pressure. We’re not going to let them go and dramatize the fact that they have a button right on their desk and they can destroy America. We want to always remind them we can destroy you too, so be very cautious and careful with your words and what you do.”

Girl Scout Cookie Season Has Officially Began and All is Right in the World

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! And no, we don’t mean the holiday season.

Girl Scout cookies are officially back!

According to USA Today, the official Girl Scouts Cookie Season is between January and April. In addition, Girl Scouts will be bringing back the popular 2017 addition: the S’more. The S’more cookie, according to the Girl Scouts, was the “most popular flavor to launch” in Girl Scout history, USA Today reports.

But of course, the most popular cookies still are the Thin Mint and Samoas.

During each Girl Scouts cookie season, nearly 200 million boxes of cookies are sold, bringing in around $800 million, funding Girl Scout activities and community projects, USA Today reports.

Each official start date is different depending on your community, so make sure to check out the Girl Scouts’ website.

Enjoy all those delicious cookies!
