HC Wake-Up Call: Supreme Court Backs Texas Electoral Maps, FDA Approves Cannabis-Based Epilepsy Drug & Amazon Prime Members Now Get Discounts at Whole Foods

Supreme Court Backs Texas Republican-Drawn Electoral Maps

In a 5-4 decision Monday, the Supreme Court said Texas would be allowed to use electoral maps drawn by a Republican-lead legislature, overturning a decision made by a lower court that said the maps diluted the influence of black and Hispanic voters, the Huffington Post reports. Since their creation in 2013, the maps have been frequently challenged by civil rights groups, but have remained in place ever since — and will continue to be used, with the exception of one district, which the court found to have been drawn unconstitutionally.

The decision is one of several in which the court has allowed controversial voting maps to remain in place — it recently made a similar decision over electoral maps in North Carolina, and refused to hear cases on maps in Wisconsin and Maryland.

FDA Approves Cannabis-Based Drug to Treat Epilepsy

For the first time ever, the FDA has approved a cannabis-based drug for the treatment of a medical condition, BuzzFeed News reports. The drug will treat rare forms of epilepsy, including Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, by reducing the frequency of seizures in those who struggle with these conditions. Called Epidiolex, the drug is expected to become available sometime within 90 days as soon as the Drug Enforcement Administration is able to change its status from a schedule I drug, which currently classifies it as a drug with, “no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse.”

Amazon Prime Members Will Now Receive Discounts at Whole Foods

BLESS. As USA Today reports, as of tomorrow, Amazon Prime members will begin to reap the benefits of Amazon’s purchase of Whole Foods, with multiple discounts at everyone’s fave super expensive grocery store. The discounts, which have previously been tested in about 10 states, will give prime members an additional 10 percent discount on all sale items and special discounts on things like including some meats, fish, fruits and bulk items like nuts and granola.
