Hey Upper East Siders, ‘Gossip Girl’ is Officially Getting a Reboot

Since Gossip Girl ended in 2012, there has been lots of buzz about a potential reboot, with fans wondering when they would be able to return to Nightingale-Bamford School to reunite with all of their favorite characters, like Serena van der Woodsen or Blair Waldorf. Well, Upper East Siders, a Gossip Girl reboot is officially happening.

According to Deadline, HBO Max, the new streaming destination from WarnerMedia, will be the home for the reboot. 

The Gossip Girl reboot, which is just a 10-episode reboot right now, will pick up eight years after the original Gossip Girl website went dark and follow a new group of Manhattan’s elite rich kids, E! News reports. This new generation of private school teens are introduced to the watchful eye of Gossip Girl. 

It’s unclear, however, if any of the original cast will be returning for the new series. 

Joshua Safran, who was the showrunner and creator of the original Gossip Girl, is executive producing and writing the reboot. Original series creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage will also executive produce, Entertainment Weekly reports.

Safran told The Hollywood Reporter that he, Schwartz, and Savage had been contemplating the idea of a reboot for a while. 

“Then the stars aligned and we had availability to jump, and Warners, obviously, it’s something they’re very passionate about,” Safran said. “It seemed like the best time and way to do it.”

He added that this new series would be an “extension” of the original show, describing it as “a new look at this particular society in New York.” 

The series will reportedly “address just how much social media — and the landscape of New York itself — has changed in the intervening years.”

A Gossip Girl reboot was originally brought up by The CW’s Mark Pedowitz, who indicated that there was discussion regarding the possibility of bringing the show back. Gossip Girl originally aired on The CW for six seasons between 2007 and 2012.

HBO Max is set to launch in 2020 and will be the home to several new shows and old favorites like Friends and Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
