Hawaii is one of the most beautiful traveling hot spots around the globe, thanks to its rich culture and magnificent geography. But tragically, during the week of Aug. 7, the island of Maui has been ravaged by rapid wildfires that have displaced thousands of locals, and has killed at least 36 people as of Aug. 10, according to The Guardian. Here’s everything to know so far, and more on how you can help and donate to those affected by the fires.
Hawaii has become increasingly more prone to wildfires due to climate change. Maj. Gen. Kenneth Hara, commander general of the Hawaii Army National Guard, said in a briefing on Aug. 9 that the lack of rain in the area contributed to the dry conditions. That combined with strong winds created by Hurricane Dora, which was moving far south of the island, aided in creating the catastrophic wildfire. On Tuesday, Aug. 8, Hawaii Acting Governor Sylvia Luke issued an emergency proclamation for National Guard troops to be deployed to the island of Maui.
Multiple parts of Maui have been forced to evacuate. To make matters worse, according to The New York Times, two evacuation sites on the island had to close down due to oncoming flames, and evacuees had to move to other areas. People have resorted to running into the ocean to save themselves from the fires.
The effects of these wildfires on residents of Maui have undoubtedly been disastrous, and so many people around the world are looking to help. Below are several organizations you can donate to to help the victims of the Maui fires.
