With one tweet, a Twitter showdown worthy of three movies and two reboots began.
On Saturday, Dec 16th, Mark Hamill, perhaps better known as his character Luke Skywalker in Star Wars, took it upon himself to call out Ajit Pai. If you’re out of the loop, Pai is the chairman of the FCC, which recently ruled to repeal Net Neutrality.
Hamill challenged Pai for using a toy lightsaber, proclaiming “A Jedi acts selflessly for the common man-NOT lie [to] enrich giant corporations.”
Cute video Ajit “Aren’t I Precious?” Pai -but you are profoundly unworthy 2 wield a lightsaber-A Jedi acts selflessly for the common man-NOT lie 2 enrich giant corporations. Btw-did you pay John Williams his royalty? @AjitPaiFCCorpShill #AJediYouAreNOT pic.twitter.com/SpIcOEySUY

Obviously, plenty of people applauded this call out post:

However, Ted Cruz did not appreciate it. The former presidential candidate and Texas Senator decided to take the Star Wars references further by comparing Net Neutrality to the Dark Side (even though Darth Vader couldn’t support Net Neutrality since there’s no Internet in the Star Wars galaxy…)
.@HammillHimself Luke, I know Hollywood can be confusing, but it was Vader who supported govt power over everything said & done on the Internet. That’s why giant corps (Google, Facebook, Netflix) supported the FCC power grab of net neutrality. Reject the dark side: Free the net! https://t.co/nARkMvIEYk

However, he made a fatal mistake in taking on the Jedi Master. Hamill responded with a particularly crushing blow:
Thanks for smarm-spaining it to me @tedcruz I know politics can be confusing, but you’d have more credibility if you spelled my name correctly. I mean IT’S RIGHT THERE IN FRONT OF YOU! Maybe you’re just distracted from watching porn at the office again -mh https://t.co/nHpJVG1Wpe

Hamill was referencing, of course, that time Ted Cruz’s account accidentally liked a tweet that contained pornography.
Cruz then tried to take back control by outlining the reasons why Net Neutrality was “really bad for freedom,” and got some support from Donald Trump Jr., who said the Jedi was “no match for facts.”
But we’ll just conclude this saga with this response from Kumail Nanjiani:
You know Luke Skywalker fights the bad guys right? https://t.co/GsJ8WbipAP
