TBH, I’m not a huge horror film aficionado. Aside from seeing the latest Scream movie franchise, I typically don’t watch scary movies. But with Sydney Sweeney starring in a new horror film, I might have to overcome my fear of unsettling events and be one of the first people in the theater. Sweeney’s upcoming film, Immaculate, is a psychological horror that released its debut trailer on Jan. 25 — ahead of its theatrical release later this year — and I’m both nervous and excited to see it.
The film’s trailer follows Sweeney’s character, Cecilia, an American woman of fervent faith who embarks on her journey as a nun at an isolated convent in Italy. While there, Cecilia realizes she’s pregnant and that the convent members appear to be after her for what she’s carrying inside of her. Is it a baby after all? Cecilia’s initial welcome fades quickly as she realizes it’s all a facade and that secrets and unspeakable horrors are waiting for her. After watching the trailer, I have a lot of remaining questions about the film, and I’m sure you do to. Here’s everything you need to know about Immaculate.
When will Immaculate be released?
Immaculate is set to arrive in theaters on Mar. 22. So far, it’s unknown if the film will also be released on streaming platforms but it might be following its theatrical run.
Where Was Immaculate Filmed?
You may be asking where such a horrific tale like this might be filmed. The movie’s storyline states that it will be set in a convent in the gorgeous Italian countryside The combination of horror and the beauty of Italy makes me want to see how the film caters to both. In terms of the actual filming site, it was actually in Italy — Rome to be exact.
Sweeney spoke on what it was like filming at the site for the horror film with Deadline back in Feb. 2023, noting, “It’s madness. I go unhinged, which always is fun. But it’s also beautiful. I really wanted to make sure that it was a beautifully shot horror film because we were filming in such a beautiful location,” she said. “Rome is stunning, so I wanted to do the locations justice.”
Who else stars IN IMMACULATE?
Aside from Sweeney’s role as Cecilia in Immaculate, other cast members include fellow White Lotus alum Simona Tabasco, who played Lucia Greco in Season 2 of the HBO series. The cast also features Álvaro Morte (Netflix’s Money Heist) and Benedetta Porcaroli.
Is it weird to be scared and excited at the same time? That’s how the thought of seeing this movie is making me feel.
