Ivy League Lacrosse Coach Fired After Hitting Player

During a game over the weekend, Princeton’s men’s lacrosse coach elbowed an opposing player as he ran off the field, ESPN reports. Coach Chris Bates was fired earlier this week.

Bates was caught on video elbowing Brown University player John Yozzo-Scaperrotta as he headed off the field toward the substitution box during the game at Brown—which Brown won 19-8—on Saturday, the New York Daily News reports.

“There’s more context to the story than what appears in a :5 clip,” Bates told the New York Daily News in an email. Just before Bates hit him, Yozzo-Scaperrotta had crashed into a Princeton player during the game, ESPN reports.

The video, however, speaks for itself:

Princeton is now searching to replace Bates. In the meantime, offensive coordinator Matt Madalon will take his place, ESPN reports.
