From her public mishaps to her candid remarks, Jennifer Lawrence seems like a normal girl we can all relate to. But in her recent interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Lawrence is firing back at people who call her normal—or at least, those who call her body type normal. She speaks on our society’s warped perception of body types and says she would “like us to make a new normal-body type.”
“Everybody says, ‘We love that there is somebody with a normal body!’ And I’m like, ‘I don’t feel like I have a normal body,'” Lawrence explains. “I do Pilates every day. I eat, but I work out a lot more than a normal person.”
She continues on to ponder the reason behind the widely-skewed perception of body types: “I think we’ve gotten so used to underweight that when you are a normal weight it’s like, ‘Oh, my God, she’s curvy.’ Which is crazy.”
The notion of underweight people being “normal” has been a reoccuring issue in the entertainment industry. Earlier this year, Pretty Little Liars star Ashley Benson was turned down from a role because she was “too fat“—despite being a size 2!
We can only hope that with more celebrities speaking out about body image, we can dismantle the notion that only skinny bodies are “normal,” and we can begin to embrace ALL body types.
