Not even 24 hours after their divorce was reported by media outlets, both Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner released a statement on Instagram confirming their split. The statement reads, “After four wonderful years of marriage we have mutually decided to amicably end our marriage. There are many speculative narratives as to why but, truly this is a united decision and we sincerely hope that everyone can respect our wishes for privacy for us and our children.”
Jonas and Turner are the latest celebrity couple to call it quits this year (let’s not forget the unexpected breakups of Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn, then Ariana Grande and Dalton Gomez). During Labor Day Weekend, rumors began to swirl that Jonas was looking to end his marriage to Turner after he reportedly met with a divorce lawyer. These rumors were quickly put to rest when the singer was spotted publicly wearing his wedding ring on Sept. 4. So, when news of divorce was released on Sept. 5, fans were completely blindsided. According to TODAY, Jonas filed a petition for dissolution of marriage in Miami Dade County, Florida, citing that his marriage to Turner is “irretrievably broken.”
Jonas and Turner first met on Instagram in 2016. In a 2019 interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Turner revealed that Jonas slid into her DMs and the rest was history. “We had a lot of mutual friends and they’d been trying to introduce us for a long time. We were following each other on Instagram and he direct-messaged me one fine day, out of the blue,” she said.
After dating for about a year, Jonas and Turner announced their engagement in October 2017, when they both uploaded photos of the Game Of Thrones star’s ring to Instagram. The pair then had two weddings. The first took place in May 2019 after the Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas. They then had an extravagant wedding a month later at Chateau de Tourreau in the south of France. Jonas explained their reason for having two weddings in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar saying they “had to do a legal marriage before we did a real big one.”
In 2020, the couple welcomed their daughter, Willa, together. Two years later, Turner gave birth to their second daughter, whose name isn’t been publicly revealed, a few months after debuting her baby bump at the 2022 Met Gala.
To fans, it seemed Jonas and Turner had the ideal marriage and were going to be together forever. Let’s not forget the actress was Joe’s biggest supporter during the Jonas Brothers’ concert at Yankee Stadium in August 2023. She even made an Instagram post about the concert, in which she and Jonas appeared to be very much in love. So you can just imagine how ~shocked~ Jophie fans were after hearing the news of their split. While many of us didn’t want to believe that Jonas and Turner are really over, their latest Instagram posts just go to show that some things don’t last forever.
