Cue the iconic “dun, dun” sound effect — Law & Order: SVU isn’t going anywhere. On Wednesday, NBC’s Robert Greenblatt said the show will continue as long as Mariska Hargitay, who plays the titular character of Lt. Olivia Benson, wants to be on board.Â
For now, that definitely seems to be the case. Hargitay told The Hollywood Reporter she’s “in it for the long haul,” citing Michael Chernunchin’s writing as one of the reasons why.Â
“I said, ‘You keep writing like this, I’ll stay for 25 years.'” Hargitay said. “Why would I leave? I’m so grateful.”
SVU is approaching it’s 20th season, tying Gunsmoke and the original Law & Order as the longest-running primetime drama.Â
Â
Hargitay has been with the show since the pilot, though her role has certainly evolved over time. She’s directed a number of episodes, and now serves as one of the show’s executive producers.Â
Hargitay has also earned eight consecutive Emmy nominations and one win for her portrayal of Benson. Other awards include a Golden Globe and two Gracie Allen Awards for American Women in Radio and Television.
If you’re still holding out for a reunion between Benson and her longtime partner, Elliot Stabler (Chris Meloni), it’s not out of the question. Hargitay told TV Insider that while Meloni is happy on another show for now, she thinks it would be fun to have “one last hurrah.”
I loved Stabler, but TBH, Benson has been killing it for years all by herself — and I can’t wait to keep watching her continue!
