Many of us think of college as the most remarkable years filled with opportunity for new experiences, and a time meet lifelong friends and grow into our true selves. And while that is true for some – the reality is that nearly 1 in 5 college students are affected with anxiety or depression. Yes, really.
According to the latest Center for Collegiate Mental Health report, anxiety and depression are the top reasons that college students seek counseling – and that makes sense when you consider a typical student might confront a heavy workload, cyberbullying, changing relationships, homesickness, substance abuse and more over their years at school.
Obviously, mental health is a huge topic on college campuses, and that’s why the next Get With The Times event will shine a light on this topic by bringing NBA all-star Kevin Love to the stage to discuss his mental health journey on November 29.
Not familiar with Get With The Times? It’s a live event conversation series from The New York Times that brings students together with influencers and famous figures to discuss vital issues facing the world today – in this case, a discussion about mental health. Each event takes place on a college campus and is broadcast to watch parties hosted on other campuses.
Love was an obvious and critical choice for this conversation. In his 11 seasons playing professional basketball, he won five All-Star selections, an NBA Championship and a gold medal from both the Olympics and the FIBA World Championships. From the outside, it looked like he was on top of the world, but he was also struggling with anxiety and depression. Eventually Love suffered a panic attack before a game, which he then wrote about in The Player’s Tribune, making him one of the first professional athletes to talk about this issue publicly.
Love will be interviewed by Sports of The Times columnist Juliet Macur, and this event is also supported by HBC Foundation’s HEADFIRST Program, which focuses on providing mental health support for teens and young adults.
If you’re ready to get involved, it all starts here! Mark your calendars for November 29, 2018 at 6:30 p.m. EST when “The Mental Game With Kevin Love” will be taking place at Tufts University.
If you can’t make the event IRL, you can learn more here about how to host your own watch party or tune into a livestream. It’s time to connect with other students about what matters most – stay up to date on even more upcoming events by subscribing to The New York Times.
