Lizzo Brought Us All To Church With Her Grammys Performance

2023 doesn’t appear to be the year when Lizzo will be slowing down any time soon — rather, it seems that the pop sensation has only just begun. With Lizzo’s Special 2our — the second leg of her North American tour — set to kick off in a few months and the announcement that she was scheduled to perform at the 2023 Grammys, all I can say is that it’s about damn time she got the recognition she deserves.

Lizzo was nominated for several awards this year, including a few for her popular hit “About Damn Time” from her most recent album, Special. Her song received nominations for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Pop Solo Performance, as well as Album of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album for Special. This year, Tiktokers and music fans were divided as to which musical artist would win in each category, but some predicted Lizzo would win, at least, Best Pop Solo Performance or Song of the Year. Nominations aside, can we just talk about how iconic her performance was for the 2023 Grammys?

Jayla Rose Sullivan, a dancer in Lizzo’s Watch Out for the Big Grrrls series, introduced her performance by expressing her admiration for her and her gratitude for opening doors in the entertainment industry for “women of size, women of color, and people of all different gender expressions.”

Lizzo graced the scene with only her silhouette and her pure vocals, which were simply heavenly. She then brought gospel along with the instrumentals to the 2023 Grammys with an entire black women’s choir and took a hit to the haters and sang the song “Special”.  The track is about raising your self-esteem and being supportive of yourself before anyone else’s opinions — a topic that Lizzo is very expressive about and that she holds dear. She also added the line “About Damn Time,” which not only blended well but also emphasized the importance of the message.

Fans of Lizzo have been all over Twitter, and for good reason. Safe to say, this iconic performance is going down in history.
