“This is a story about a girl named Lucky.”
If you read those words and instantly got hit with a pang of nostalgia, congratulations, you might be a 90s baby like me (and now, I feel ancient). The song “Lucky” by Britney Spears transports me back to the golden days when my biggest care in the world was making sure I nailed the choreo to “Hit Me Baby, One More Time” in my living room. Recently, the nostalgia returned in full-force when I discovered the “Lucky” TikTok trend, and I must say, it’s one of my favorites we’ve covered on TikTalk to date.
Before I get into the trend, let me just say: #FreeBritney. If you’ve kept up with pop culture news over the past year, you know that our queen has been through some pretty tough stuff — particularly, dealing with the infamous, abusive conservatorship and consistent attempts to break free of her father’s control. Not only has Britney bravely testified in court about her story, but she has managed to remind the world that while she is, indeed, a star, she is also deeply human, and deserves to be treated as such.
Considering all Britney has been through in her life, the lyrics to “Lucky” feel bittersweet and somehow, even more meaningful. The song came out in 2000 on the “Oops!…I Did It Again” album, and now, TikTok is bringing back the hit with this fun viral trend. The premise: TikTokers show off their “luckiest” moments using this trending audio in the background, which features the opening line of the song, which says: “This is a story about a girl named Lucky.” TikTokers are using the audio to highlight the clutch moments when they’ve gotten lucky — like when they submit a project two minutes before it’s due or when they’re moving to NYC and a random family gives them a brand new (free!) couch.
Obviously, this is a story about a girl named Lucky, and that girl is you. I love this version of the trend from Shay Mitchell that says, “when the 10-page scene you forgot to memorize gets cancelled” and this one from TikToker @therealrahulrai, who exhales a sigh of relief when plans get cancelled and he can stay inside like a proud introvert. Makayla Culpepper (@whatwouldjimmybuffettdo), who you may recognize from #AlabamaRush TikTok, spills the tea with her version of the #Lucky trend, with text overlay that says: “when getting dropped by Alabama sorority recruitment made u thousands of dollars and got u famous friends.” They don’t deserve you anyway, sis!
If you’re ready to try the “Lucky” TikTok trend yourself, think about a time when luck was truly on your side, whether you heard back from a job the day after you applied or you survived wearing white pants all day without getting your period (phew). Ideally, you want to choose a clutch situation that feels honest and relatable. And if you can’t think of a lucky moment off the top of your head, you can always film your adorable corgi who just so happens to live on a boat or your overly-dramatic cat, who feels #blessed to be in a six-figure household with no children in sight.
Of the many marvelous TikTok trends out there, I appreciate how #Lucky utilizes an iconic trending sound in a way that feels approachable, isn’t overly complicated, and makes perfect sense. Whether you’re brand new to TikTok or you’re a millennial who hasn’t shut up about Britney Spears since the 90s and early 2000s (TBH, same), you’ll love the “Lucky” TikTok trend and the many versions out there on the app. Grab the trending audio here, capture your #Lucky moment, and remember, no matter what happens, #FreeBritney.
