Almost 2 decades later, Mean Girls has once again found itself back in the spotlight (but to be honest, it’s never left) due to its musical adaptation being released on Jan. 12. You’ve probably seen hot pink school lockers and advertisements referencing the original film, or maybe you’re streaming Not My Fault for the 50th time this year. It’s clear that the start of January is Mean Girls-filled and we’re excited to see what this next generation of Plastics has to offer.
With the release of the new Mean Girls musical movie, fans of the original film and the Broadway adaptation have already purchased tickets, began streaming the musical numbers, and of course, started planning out their pink outfits to attend their screenings. Some are already preparing themselves to see their favorites such as Reneé Rapp and Auli’i Cravalho to perform songs from the soundtrack. With so much excitement surrounding the movie’s release, I can’t help but wonder if the musical adaptation of Mean Girls will be able to stream after its run in theaters. Here’s what we know so far.
Will Mean Girls be on streaming services?
Mean Girls the musical will premiere in theaters on Jan. 12. The film was originally planned to be released on Paramount+, but will be available on the streaming platform after its theatrical run.
According to ScreenRant, the streaming release date for Mean Girls has yet to be announced. However, the outlet suspects the movie will be released on Paramount+ sometime in February or March 2024.
What can fans expect from the new Mean Girls movie?
We won’t be giving away spoilers on the Mean Girls tracklist, but for fans of the musical, we can guarantee that some of your favorite songs will be in the movie. There are, of course, some songs cut, and new songs added (some were even performed and co-written by Rapp) to fuel your inner theater kid. You can also expect to see some familiar faces throughout the film, and some of the most iconic Mean Girls moments will appear in the musical adaptation.
Though the new Mean Girls movie is based on the Broadway musical, you can expect to see moments and characters from the original film in the 2024 version. In addition to the talent show scene and the Halloween party, characters like Ms. Norbury (played by Tina Fey) and Principal DuVall (played by Tim Meadows) will make a comeback in the movie.
The trailer and promotion have already proven to be so fetch and we can’t wait to watch this new adaption of Mean Girls.
