Everything To Know About The Met Gala, From The Guest List To The Ticket Price

Fashion’s biggest night out is coming. On May 1, the 2023 Met Gala will commence, filling the night with stunning outfit ensembles created by world-renowned designers. The fashion event, also coined the Oscars of fashion, historically always lands on the first Monday in May, with fashion fans glued to their screens and raving over every celebrity outfit.

People fawn over the Met Gala every year, but you may be asking yourself, “What is the Met Gala?” Other than The Metropolitan Museum of Art housing the steps where many Gossip Girl Blair and Serena moments took place, it’s also one of the world’s largest museums. The Met was founded in 1870 by American citizens who wanted a museum to bring art and art education to the masses. The Met includes collections with more than two million works of art, spanning over 5,000 years of world culture.

The Met Gala is a fundraising benefit for the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City that began in 1948 for its Costume Institute. The ball tends to raise millions, hence extravagant outfits that are worn to honor the occasion.

The 2023 Met Gala Theme

Every year, the Met Gala announces a specific theme to inspire outfit ideas for designers and attendants. Last year’s theme was In America: An Anthology of Fashion, exploring the evolution of American style. Some of the most popular themes over the past few years include Camp: Notes on Fashion in 2019 and Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination in 2018.

This year’s theme is Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty, honoring the late Karl Lagerfeld who passed away in 2019 at 85. Lagerfeld was a fashion designer who designed for several houses, including Patou, Balmain, Chloé, Fendi, and Chanel. Fans can anticipate many attendants wearing outfits from these fashion houses.

The 2023 Met Gala Hosts

In January, Vogue exclusively announced the hosts would be Vogue‘s Anna Wintour — who has run the Met Gala since 1995 — PenĂ©lope Cruz, Michaela Coel, Roger Federer, and Dua Lipa. The hosts work in unison to create the perfect night for the event by choosing the specific decor, appointing chefs and meal menus, putting together the guest list, and organizing entertainment for the evening.

The 2023 Met Gala Guest List

The guest list is usually tight-lipped, but many A-list guests have attended the Met Gala over the years, like Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds, Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, the Hadid sisters, Timothee Chalamet, and more. Over the past few years, guest lists have branched out to influencers, like Emma Chamberlain and Addison Rae. For this year’s event, fans can expect the usual A-listers, like Kim Kardashian, as well as a new generation of young celebrities, including Chamberlain. Those who attended last year included Billie Eilish, Megan Thee Stallion, Phoebe Bridgers, SZA, Bad Bunny, Rosalía, Olivia Rodrigo, Lizzo, Finneas, Jack Harlow, and many more.

The 2023 Met Gala Ticket Price

The fundraiser is raised through the sale of tickets, which are bought by designers and brands that invite celebrities, who will be wearing and representing their works. The tickets cost around $35,000 each, with tables ranging from $200,000 to $300,000.
