I love celebrities who noticeably calm down after a bit of a wild period, and Miley Cyrus is definitely becoming one of these stars. Things were a little crazy for her a couple of years ago, but she has seemed to develop a new kind of maturity recently. She spilled the tea on her crazier moments in her Carpool Karaoke segment with James Corden, revealing the truth about her infamous “Wrecking Ball” video and how sober she was for that VMAs performance. This is the tell all I’ve wanted for years.
Although Refinery29 reports that Cyrus quit smoking marijuana, that didn’t stop her from discussing her past with it while doing Carpool Karaoke. When Corden asked if she was high while performing “We Can’t Stop” at the 2013 VMAs, Cyrus actually gave a bit of a disappointing response.
“Actually zero,” Cyrus said of how high she was then on a scale of one to 10. “Zero. I can’t smoke before I go on stage. I get too scared…That’s just me…That’s how insane I am. That’s just normal.”
However, she did admit to being at a 10 while filming the “Wrecking Ball” video, also discussing what she thought of to muster up tears for the song. “I had a puppy who died, [who] was like, my number one,” she said. “I thought about my puppy the whole time. That’s how much I loved my puppy.”
Although the karaoke bash was severely missing a Hannah Montana singalong, Cyrus proved that she has definitely learned from her crazier moments. “I think the first VMAs [in 2013 with the] twerking, Robin Thicke…led me to being the activist that I am now because I realized if that many people were going to talk about something that I did or something that I do that I should make it a good thing,” she told Corden. “And I should make it something that can change people’s lives rather than be a controversial conversation that does nothing but become a fun Halloween costume for people.”
Nicely said, girl. I’m glad to see Cyrus growing up and living her best life today. Check out her full Carpool Karaoke segment above!
