With only a few weeks until the release of the highly anticipated sequel to Marvel’s Black Panther, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, pop culture appears to be in a frenzy over the daily teasers and information released about the film. Whether it’s speculation about Letitia Wright’s character, Shuri, potentially carrying on the legacy of the Black Panther in the movie, or Rihanna’s return to the music world for the film’s soundtrack as a tribute to the late Chadwick Boseman, fans have been on the edge of their seats.
While we can’t, unfortunately, speed up the release date, we can keep ourselves entertained by watching shows and movies that are similar to Black Panther, which should keep you occupied until its eventual premiere on Nov. 11!
- Cloak & Dagger
-
Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger, a Freeform original series, is based on a modern retelling of the same-named comic book story. The show follows Tandy Bowen and Tyrone Johnson, two teenagers from different backgrounds. Their pasts intertwine after one fateful night, leading them to gain superpowers that grow stronger when they work together.
The show tackles real-world societal issues such as police brutality against Black youth, racism, privilege, female empowerment, and other topics that are heavily discussed in the Black Panther film. If you want to watch another classic from the Marvel franchise with a strong Black lead character, Cloak and Dagger is the place to go.
- Avengers: Endgame
-
Following the events of Avengers: Infinity War, which saw the Titan, Thanos, snap away half of the population, it’s up to the remaining superheroes left to defeat the Eternal once and for all in Avengers: Endgame. During the 2019 film’s climax, we see the return of our beloved superhero, T’Challa, along with his sister, Shuri, and general of the Dora Milaje, Okoye, from the Snap, as well as every other superhero who perished.
The heroes band together to face Thanos one last time in the epic conclusion (major spoiler alert, sorry not sorry)! If the first Black Panther storyline still holds a special place in your heart, why not follow it through this film?
- Wonder Woman
-
The DC film follows Wonder Woman’s origin story, when she lived as Diana on the island paradise of Themyscira, ruling as a princess. She was taught there by the Amazons, who had been tasked by the Greek Gods with protecting humans from Ares’ return.
When an American soldier crash lands on the island and reveals that World War I is affecting the outside world, killing millions, Diana recognizes this as a sign from Ares and decides to join forces with the soldier to end the war and save the rest of humanity. The superhero film is just as action-packed and intense as the Black Panther franchise, while also emphasizing female empowerment through the female protagonist’s eyes!
- Spider-man: Homecoming
-
The plot revolves around Tom Holland’s Peter Parker, a student at Midtown School of Science and Technology. Unlike the average teenager, Peter Parker is hiding the incredible secret that he is everyone’s favorite friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. In the film, Peter works under the supervision of Avengers member Tony Stark while juggling school, crushes, and friendships, all while attempting to save the world from Vulture. If you’re looking for a more light-hearted and comedic superhero film to watch, this is the one!
- Black Lightning
-
Black Lighting is a CW series that follows the character Jefferson Pierce as he navigates through fatherhood with raising his two daughters. Pierce used his superpower abilities of controlling electricity to protect the streets of his community, while also attempting to protect the ones he loved the most. After he chooses to live that life in the past, however, danger threatens his community again, and he decides to become a hero once more.
As the series progresses, his daughters, Anissa and Jennifer Pierce, eventually become heroes Thunder and Lightning, with powers like their father. The series investigates racism and social justice issues while following Black leads!
