On Wednesday January 6, Trump supporters gathered together and stormed the Capitol in protest of Biden winning the Presidency, leading the men and women of Congress to evacuate. These events were extremely appalling and upsetting to watch as a nation, with many calling it an act of terrorism. To all of those upset and panicked by these events, I feel exactly what you feel. At least one is dead, Capitol windows were shattered, and COVID numbers could be going up because of this, and it’s hard to watch so many people just… not care.
But not everyone is like the people we saw terrorizing the Capitol, and its inhabitants, yesterday. What happened was absolutely disgusting, but while 2021 hasn’t gotten off to a great start with this protest, I want you to remember that 2020 is over and this will be a new year, a year of hope. In two weeks, maybe even closer, we’ll have a new president – one that doesn’t spew messages of hate on Twitter or organize a coup for his own benefit of chaos and destruction, just because he lost – and you’re not alone in your disappointment over yesterday’s events or your hope for better things to come. Here are 20 tweets that share your sentiments – from lawmakers to everyday people like you and me – that I hope can give you peace of mind, and assure you that a better future will be coming soon.
America is so much better than what we’re seeing today.

Let me be very clear: the scenes of chaos at the Capitol do not represent who we are. What we are seeing is a small number of extremists dedicated to lawlessness. This is not dissent, it’s disorder. It borders on sedition, and it must end. Now.

A woman died in the riots in DC, and the President who incited this will not be held accountable. I’m disgusted with the rest of our lawmakers.

Absolutely in shock by what is happening at the United States Capitol.
This is not a protest. This is an insurrection.
This grave moment in history will forever rest at the feet of those who knew democracy was hanging in the balance, and chose to play along.
No words.
— Charles Booker (@Booker4KY) January 6, 2021
“Nazi flags and confederate flags are flying at the U.S. Capitol as part of a riot incited by the President” is really… a combination of words.

We must call today’s violence what it actually is: a failed attempt at a coup.
We won’t let President Trump, those in Congress who enable him, or the lawless mob that stormed the Capitol steal our democracy.

Democracy does not look like this. This is an attempted coup. This is domestic terrorism. This is white supremacy in action.

To all the kids of the next generation: take notes. This is not how you’re supposed to act when you lose. #MAGAIsCancelled #CapitolHill #democracy

I 100% support peaceful protest but this is not it. What is happening at the Capitol right now is unacceptable and it has to stop immediately.
— Markwayne Mullin (@RepMullin) January 6, 2021
This is a coup attempt.
— Adam Kinzinger (@RepKinzinger) January 6, 2021
The President has been encouraging these domestic terrorists since before the election.
He could have stopped them at any moment, but instead he whipped them into a frenzy and sicced them on the Capitol.
The Cabinet must remove him today or the House must impeach.
— Rep. Jennifer Wexton (@RepWexton) January 6, 2021
I’m in the House chamber for debate while just a few feet away supporters of Donald Trump riot and fight with Capitol police outside the Capitol. It didn’t need to be this way. Enablers of Donald Trump led us to this point.
— Rep. Jason Crow (@RepJasonCrow) January 6, 2021
To the violent extremists in our Capitol: Just so you know, you failed.
We will return to the Capitol tonight to begin certification of the 2020 election. You won’t stop us from fulfilling that duty and upholding our democracy.
— Rep. Susie Lee (@RepSusieLee) January 6, 2021
This is more than protesting. This is more than rioting. This is violent extremism aimed at the very heart of our democracy. It needs to stop.@realDonaldTrump, you have a responsibility to stop this. You need to unequivocally call for an end to this violence. Now.
— Rep. Susie Lee (@RepSusieLee) January 6, 2021
I’m super disturbed by what’s happening here. #LockHimUpNow #dcprotest #CapitolHill

I’m sheltering in place in my office. The building next door has been evacuated. I can’t believe I have to write this.
— Rep. Haley Stevens (@RepHaleyStevens) January 6, 2021
“The unlawful use of force and violence against persons or property to intimidate or coerce a government.” <- the definition of terrorism according to the FBI. This is not a protest. Call it what it is.

Sorry for the earlier comma typo. It’s been a day.
— Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) January 7, 2021
I’m okay.

And lastly, a tweet by AOC saying what we’re all thinking right now:
Impeach.
