From “The Dress” to Pizza Rat, 2015 delivered some of the best content for chronically online people. And, its impact continues to shape the internet because the “Oh, that’s not—” TikTok trend is actually a ghost of 2015 past. Seriously, it’s all over my FYP.
The trend, which has literally taken over all of TikTok, involves a person saying “If you kick [something] out of the country, then who will…” And, people have been filling in the blanks with some seriously hilarious, controversial, and sometimes unsavory hot takes.
In one of the trend’s most viral videos, currently with 2.6 million likes, the creator (@Eli_orWhatever) says “If you kick every they/them out of this country, who is going to be making your drinks, Starbucks?” The trend sometimes employs stereotypes and tropes that can be potentially harmful, but most of the time they’re just lighthearted and real.
In one of my favorites, currently sitting with over 234,000 likes, the creator (@dduany) says, “If you kick every Black person out of this country, then who’s gonna make your trends?” I mean, they’ve got a point.
The internet seems to be living for the campiness of the trend, and that’s probably because it’s just a spoof of a cringe-worthy original video from 2015. While appearing on the popular daytime talk show The View, Kelly Osbourne and her co-hosts were discussing Donald Trump’s immigration opinions when Osbourne stated “If you kick every Latino out of this country, then who is going to be cleaning your toilet, Donald Trump?”
The controversial comment was met with immediate criticism, with one co-host replying “Oh, that’s not—” before Osbourne interrupted to say “in the sense that, you know what I mean, what I’m saying.” Osbourne clearly butchered the delivery of her criticism against Trump’s immigration policy, ultimately ending up perpetuating harmful stereotypes against Latinx folks. She probably hoped the moment would be swept under the rug, but if you know anything about internet sleuths, no stone goes unturned.
The internet has been having a field day with this trend, and using it to poke fun at trends, like 10-year-olds shopping Drunk Elephant makeup products at Sephora or men making lame podcasts. Personally, I think it’s hilarious.
If you want to join in on the “Oh, that’s not” trend, here’s a little breakdown: When you’re filming, fill in the blanks to “if you kick [something] out of the country, then who will…”. Then, look around before saying “in the sense that…”. Then, when you’re editing the video, add a voiceover saying “Oh, that’s not” right after the opinion. You’re basically pretending to be everyone in the video from The View.
Now, all you have to do is gather your (unproblematic) hot take and film your video. Together, we can all keep the spirit of 2015 alive. It’s what we deserve.
