On Thursday afternoon, an unidentified suspect shot and killed a Virginia Tech police officer during a routine traffic stop on campus and fled the scene on foot through the Cage parking lot.
The suspect is described by the university as a white male wearing gray sweatpants, a gray hat with a neon green brim, a maroon hoodie and backpack. He has not yet been apprehended by the authorities.
A second victim was discovered dead in the parking lot.
Virginia Tech has advised all students and staff to remain inside and lock their doors. Classes were not scheduled for Thursday.
This is not the first time Virginia Tech has experienced this type of emergency — in 2007, gunman Seung-hui Cho killed 32 people on campus, making it the deadliest shooting in U.S. history.
