If people in Utah try to watch some porn on the site xHamster, they’re going to get a popup—asking if they want to learn more about sex ed, according to Cosmopolitan. The popup gives Utah users the option to be redirected to a series of (PG-13) xHamster sex education videos called The Box, which the company’s apparently been working on since last year.
This comes after Utah lawmakers rejected a bill that would have given parents the choice of opting their children into comprehensive sex education classes. Right now, the state’s standard is abstinence-only, Vocativ reported. And research has shown that abstinence-only programs don’t actually stop teens from having sex, or make them any “purer.”
Case in point: Utahns were declared to buy online porn at a higher rate than the rest of America in a 2009 report. Last April, Governor Gary Herbert called porn a “public health hazard,” CNN reported.
In a blog post, xHamster explained its decision to reroute traffic to a sex education site.
“Today, the Utah legislature voted against comprehensive sex ed in schools in favor of abstinence education. Ironically, over the past few years, politicians in the state have also waged a war on porn, worried that it provides inauthentic views of sexuality,” the blog post began.
“While we love porn, we don’t think that it should be relied on for sex ed any more than Star Wars is a substitute for science class. Utahns consume the most porn per capita of any state in the nation. Let’s see if we can turn the thirstiest state in the nation into the most sexually aware.”
