Pretty Little Liars Recap: Season 4, Episode 9

Mona: is questioned by the police and claims that she killed Wilden as an act of self-defense. She adds that, at the Halloween party, Wilden was afraid that Garrett was going to reveal the truth about Allison’s murder, so he decided to kill him. Mona saw this, which obviously put her in danger. Mona also tells the police that Wilden was obsessed with pinning Allie’s murder on the girls, and she couldn’t just let her best friend, Hanna, or her best friend’s mom take the blame for something they didn’t commit.

Hanna: is thrilled when she learns that Mona’s confession has stopped her mother’s transfer to another prison and that the judge has posted bail for Ashley. However, her joy is short-lived when Spencer’s mom tells Hanna that Mona’s confession has not stopped the trial and that Ashley’s bail is a million dollars because Wilden was police officer. Hanna only has to pay one-tenth of the full amount to free her mom, but that’s still 100,000 dollars that she doesn’t have. Hanna calls her dad, asking him to pony up the cash, but he is hesitant. After she hangs up, she sees Ted, the semi-hot Pastor/kind of boyfriend of Ashley. He tells Hanna that he thinks about Ashley all the time, and she confides in him about her need for bail money. He tells her to have faith, but that doesn’t really put the impatient Hanna’s mind at ease. Soon after, Ashley’s bail is posted anonymously and she is allowed to return home. However, Ashley couldn’t come back without a new souvenir and accessory to commemorate her time in the slammer, so she now sports a house arrest bracelet. Hanna foregoes Emily’s birthday party to spend the night with her mom, although their special bonding time is soon interrupted by Ted. However, they can’t be too mad about the intrusion since it comes with pie. Later, Hanna calls her dad to thank him for posting Ashley’s bail. After she hangs up, however, she gets a call from Mona, in which she alludes to paying Ashley’s bail. Mona packs a bag while on the phone with Hanna, and it’s assumed that this devious little girl is about to skip town.  Before Hanna goes to sleep that night, Ashley enters Hanna’s room and tells her that her dad wasn’t the one who posted Ashley’s bail. Ashley thinks that it is Ted, but Hanna knows better.

Emily: is about to turn 18, and Paige wants her to have the best birthday ever. She asks Emily to spend her birthday relaxing with her at her aunt’s lakehouse, and also gives Emily her birthday present. Paige has made an appointment for Emily with Dominic Costello, a prestigious swimming trainer who has trained both Division 1 swimmers and Olympic gold medalists. When Emily meets with Dominic, he tells her that she has potential but that she will have to delay going to college for a year in order to train for the next round of recruitments. However, when Emily tells him about her injured shoulder, he refuses to begin training her for at least six months and doesn’t think that she’ll be ready in time for next year’s scholarships. Emily leaves, disheartened. Later that night, Emily enters her own surprise party about to confront Paige about not telling Dominic about her injury before sending Emily to go see him, but is conveniently interrupted by her actual surprise party. Aria tells her that Jenna is back, and she is so overwhelmed by everything going on in her life that she leaves the party to go out to the dock by the lakehouse. Paige finds Emily, who finally confronts her about lying to Dominic about Emily’s condition. Paige tells Emily that she lied because she wanted to make sure that Dominic would see her, and Emily realizes that Paige wants Emily to get a swimming scholarship at Stanford more than she does. Paige and Emily vaguely discuss the uncertain future of their relationship once Paige moves across the country, but they don’t break up… yet. Later, Emily returns to the party and finds Aria in search of Spencer. When they go outside to look for her, Emily spots a body floating facedown in the lake. She runs over, thinking it’s Spencer, but instead discovers Jenna. Jenna isn’t breathing, so they call an ambulance, which arrives shortly. While the EMTs load Jenna onto the ambulance, Emily tells Aria, Spencer, and Paige that there was blood on the back of Jenna’s head, meaning that someone probably hit her before she fell into the lake.

Aria: oggles Jake’s hot and shirtless body the morning after he stays over (on her couch), which really doesn’t help her concentrate on Spencer’s daily update phone call. She and Jake stop off at The Brew before Aria leaves to meet Spencer. The non-couple is spotted by Ezra and Maggie, his baby mama. Maggie tells Ezra about her recent offer to teach in Washington, and although he’s distracted by spying on Aria and the new boy, the possible move of Maggie and his son, Malcolm, to the other side of the country does register. Later, Ezra convinces Maggie to let Malcolm stay with him while she goes check out the school in Washington next weekend, however, he makes the mistake in offering to take care of Malcolm if she decides to move to Washington. Since she’s been the main person in Malcolm’s life since he was born, she’s having none of his self-righteous new father act. That night, at Emily’s surprise party, Aria is surprised by her jealousy when she sees Jake walk in with a tall, blonde girl from the swim team. Aria spies on the duo from across the room, even though she insists to Spencer that she’s not that into him. While Aria is watching Shawna and Jenna, Jake walks over to her and reminds her that she said she was having family movie night tonight. Aria tells him that she just forgot about the party, but he brushes it off and tells her that he’s not mad because she didn’t have to invite him. Aria reveals her jealousy of his blonde bimbo companion, and Jake tells her that she’s being a hypocrite. They talk about how they’re “not a couple” and “just friends” a million times, which just shows how much they are not. Because of the argument, Aria loses track of Shawna and Jenna, but finds them by the food about to leave. Aria confronts Jenna, demanding the truth about Allie, but ends up pleading with her to tell her anything about her deceased best friend. Jenna, unmoved by Aria’s appeal, leaves. Because of the Jenna incident, Jake accompanies Aria home. He admits not fully understanding before that night why she’s on edge on the time, but now that he’s seen what she goes throught on a regular basis, he gets it. She apologizes if she ruined his night, and he explains that she didn’t because the other girl is just a friend. Finally, Aria admits her jealousy outright, but says she just can’t see how she can involve anyone else in her life right now. Jake tells her that he doesn’t care about the possible danger and still wants to be a part of her life, so, of course, they settle the matter by making out.

Spencer: asks Hanna if she knew that Mona was going to confess, which she honestly dies. Spencer’s mom interrupts them and warns that Mona’s confession contradicts evidence and that if any of the girls are involved this twist will negatively impact Ashley’s case. Later, at school, Aria and Spencer discuss Mona’s possible motives behind her confession. Spencer doesn’t buy Mona’s effort to “right all the wrongs” and reminds Aria that Mona still has a picture of the four of them standing next to Wilden’s car on the night that he died. In the middle of their conversation, they spot Shawna and Jenna talking in the courtyard. Jenna says something about talking to the police and locating Allie, which makes Spencer and Aria think that they know that Allison is still alive. They also mention Jenna’s deteriorating eyesight, reminding us of her eye surgery from a million years ago so that its sudden complications sound more legitimate. Spencer also updates Aria on the mysterious phone number, telling her that Toby traced the number back to an empty apartment, which used to be inhabited by a girl. The landlord couldn’t give Toby a name, but he did give him a forwarding address to a P.O. Box in Philadelphia. That afternoon, Aria and Spencer help Paige get her aunt’s lakehouse ready for Emily’s party, and Spencer asks Paige to invite Shawna to the party because she knows that she’ll have to bring Jenna with her. Later that night, Jenna and Shawna argue about whether or not they should go to the party, but eventually decide to go. At the party, Aria and Spencer confront Jenna about her failing eyesight, to which Jenna retorts that she sees everything she needs to. Spencer tells Aria that they will divide and conquer. Spencer gathers the swim team girls for a group photo, telling Aria to keep an eye on Jenna and Shawna. After Jenna is rushed to the hospital, Spencer goes there looking for Toby, but finds Shawna instead. Shawna tells Spencer that Jenna is still unconscious. Spencer asks Shawna if Allie is the one behind everything, but Shawna scoffs and reminds Spencer that Allie is dead. Shawna begins to walk away, but not before Spencer asks her who Jenna is so afraid of. Shawna says, “Cece Drake.”

The Final Scene: Mona returns to Radley, where the desk reads: “Will the circle be unbroken?” She smiles sickly to herself. Red Coat appears outside someone’s house, possibly Hanna’s? Long, blonde hair peeks out from the hood as she drills open a trellis enclosure and creeps in through the basement. In a seperate scene, the camera pans over a suspicious red spill on a floor. Those trademark black gloves right a bottle of red wine, then begin to play a song called “Any Time” on the piano. The gloves attach a Post-it to the sheet music and address the envelope to Toby Cavanaugh.

Reader’s Digest Version: Do we know who A is? No. Are we going to look up the lyrics to “Any Time”? You better believe it.
