Usually, awards season comes with stunning gowns, perfectly tailored suits, and an air of class and elegance… so why was there a goblin at the 2024 Emmys? ICYMI, someone hit the red carpet clad in head-to-toe prosthetics, green body paint, and a (lowkey sickening) green gown. The internet had a lot to say about the appearance of a literal goblin on the red carpet, and the biggest question on everyone’s minds was “Who was the green goblin at the Emmys?”
Well, it was revealed by the goblin herself to be Princess Poppy, a contestant from Season 15 of RuPaul’s Drag Race. And obviously, as your chronically online bestie, I did a deep dive into why Princess Poppy chose to attend as a goblin so you didn’t have to.
The appearance of a goblin was honestly more unexpected than “I’m Just Ken” winning song of the year at the Critics’ Choice Awards but, dare I say the look was a little bit camp with a green gown that matched the goblin’s skin almost perfectly. It took a little bit for the reveal of who was dressed as the goblin leading to an internet uproar of posts and tweets referencing the literal troll on the red carpet.
Princess Poppy chatted with The LA Times inside the event and revealed that she intentionally dressed as a goblin as a way to stand up against the normal expectations of award-season fashion. Snaps for that.
“I wanted to be a troll, to literally and figuratively troll the Emmys,” she told The LA Times. “The whole purpose of doing this is a way to showcase the rules of fashion, and rules of beauty and bullsh*t, I think it’s more beautiful to show up like this than to show up how you normally would at an awards show.” Iconic, if you ask me.
The best part is the goblin takeover that happened on Poppy’s Instagram which included selfies on her story and an absolutely iconic carousel post that showcased a mix of headlines and behind-the-scenes pictures from the event. During my deep dive into Poppy’s Instagram, I realized these over-the-top slightly creepy looks are definitely just part of her brand with posts showing a mix of past drag looks and super relatable memes.
Honestly, I would love to see more celebrities show up in a camp look that pushes society to be bolder. We need Princess Poppy on All Stars, stat.
