Queer Mean Girls fans, it’s our time to shine! It seems that for the movie’s upcoming musical remake, Tina Fey has finally listened to a popular fan theory about Regina George. Ever since the film came out in 2004 and was adapted into a Broadway musical in 2018, viewers have shipped Regina and Janis. A large number of Tumblr and Wattpad fanfics headcanon these two characters as a lesbian couple. Even Reneé Rapp has hinted that she imagines her version of Regina to be part of the LGBTQ+ community. Her original song for the movie “Not My Fault,” which came out Dec. 15, seems to confirm Regina’s identity as a lesbian!
“Not My Fault” opens with one of the most iconic lines from the movie and musical: “It’s not my fault you’re, like, in love with me or something!” The infectious track puts a strut-worthy melody behind this quote, turning it into a catchy riff that’ll instantly make you feel like a baddie.
Another line, “can a gay girl get an amen,” also sent fans into a frenzy.
Rapp just finished the North America leg of her Snow Hard Feelings tour, where the singer constantly made it a point to create a safe space for her LGBTQ+ audience. Knowing her status as the celebrity crush of many, Rapp often reads fan-made signs and holds pride flags on stage. On Dec. 4, Rapp seemingly nodded to such fan speculation with an Instagram caption reading “regina george was a lesbian.”
It looks like “Not My Fault” will replace some iconic songs from the Broadway musical in the movie version, but that’s a sacrifice I’m willing to make.
Needless to say, “Not My Fault” is pop perfection that I’m planning to leave on repeat for the foreseeable future. I was already counting down the days until Jan. 12, the release date of the new Mean Girls remake, but now, I’m even more impatient for the movie to come out (See what I did there? Come out?). A timeless classic turned theater kid-favorite has just given the queer community one massive win.
