With Taylor Swift being the target of many campaigns discussing âwhite feminism,â itâs no surprise that people all over the world are talking about what exactly it means to be an intersectional feminist. One woman who describes it perfectly is Girl Meets World star, Rowan Blanchard.
According to Refinery29, in a recent interview with The Cut, Blanchard hit the nail on the head, saying, âMy first definition of feminism was so small: Men and women should be equal. And maybe thatâs how you have to learn it, so that it can be more accessible.âÂ
But this didnât just come to her suddenly. Over time, she started âdiscovering Audre Lorde and Angela Davis and all of these intricacies of feminism that were not being presented to me by these white feminist âicons.’â And it didnât sit well with her.
âIt was only then that I realized how deep it is and how itâs more about undoing these walls that we have built around marginalized people â itâs not just about women and men. Itâs the fact that the walls for me are different than the walls for Amandla [Stenberg],â she said.Â
Because she is *way* ahead of where most 14-year-olds are in this debate, she added that feminism is more than fighting for equality of men and women. It is about âundoing patriarchal structures against marginalized people,â which include LGBTQ, disabled and colored women.Â
Yes, girl. Yes. Letâs all take note.Â
