Calling all fans of Outlander: a delicious treat awaits you in theaters on August 3rd in the form of Sam Heughan, star of The Spy Who Dumped Me (Sam, of course, plays Jamie Fraser in the hit TV series). In his first major Hollywood film role, Sam uses his time-tested action chops, perfected in the past three seasons of Outlander, in his new role as a spy for M16 who sets out on a mission to basically save the world. The movie has it all: romance, laughs, and wild romps around glamorous European destinations with co-stars Mila Kunis and Kate McKinnon.
Sam spoke with Her Campus this week and dished about fight scenes, female friendship, and going full-nude on camera.
Her Campus: What’s your favorite scene in The Spy Who Dumped Me?
Sam Heughan: There are so many… My favorite action scene would probably be the cafe scene, the sort of chaos of that. It was the first thing that I started shooting and actually the first scene that I did with the girls. We started over a number of days and actually did quite a few pick-ups on it as well. But it’s just a really fun scene and [my character] Sebastian obviously goes a bit too far, ends up completely destroying the place. But I loved it. And at the very end we did a little James Bond where I kill the man by drowning him in a vat full of fondue, like a nod to Casino Royale where James Bond does that in a sink to Fisher.
Actually, one of my other favorite scenes was the scene in the youth hostel with Mila. It’s just a one-on-one with her and you get to see the other side of Sebastian. You see him opening up with her a bit and realize that he’s actually quite a sweet guy.
HC: You mentioned at the premiere on Monday night that Mila and Kate’s on and off screen friendship is what made the movie so magical to be a part of. What did you learn about female friendship from working with them on this film?
SH: I think it’s beautiful that Mila and Kate have got each other’s backs. I think it’s really important, especially now with social media, that we support each other and don’t bring each other down. I think that’s the message of the movie. Mila and Kate’s characters are both trying to find their place in the world and their calling. They’ve got each other through thick and thin and ultimately they’ve got each other and support each other in this unstoppable team. In real life, these girls just became so tight. They became so tight that it’s just nice to be around them.
HC: You went from full-nude sex scenes in Outlander to lots of action and fight scenes in The Spy Who Dumped Me. What do you want your next big acting challenge to be?
SH: Probably a fully nude fight scene! I’m actually going to be filming a movie with Vin Diesel in South Africa in a couple of weeks. The movie’s called ‘Bloodshot’ and is based on a comic book series by Valiant Comics. So it’s going to be completely different, in the sense that it’s a different world and character for me. It’s going to be cool, people are going to be surprised by it, I think. The director, Dave Wilson, has been amazing so far and I’m looking forward to it.
HC: There are rumors going around right now about you possibly succeeding Daniel Craig as James Bond. Why do you think you’d make a great Bond?
SH: There are countless benefits to me being James Bond. Obviously, I’m Scottish so that helps because Ian Fleming was raised in Scotland and had Scottish roots. I’ve already got my own fast car and Tuxedo. I think it’s almost there, we just need a really good Bond Girl. But maybe we should flip it on its head. Maybe I’m the Bond girl and we should get a female Bond.
HC: What can Outlander fans look forward to in Season 4?
SH: It is a new world. Jamie and Claire are settling in America and trying to create a home. They’ve always wanted to settle down. Jamie especially has always wanted to have this be [an opportunity] to have an extended family. It’s the first time that we actually get to do that.
We also see America in its infancy; it’s a brave new world, there’s a lot of different cultures colliding and different people. It’s really interesting to see America in its infancy as a land of immigrants. It’s not without its dangers as well. So it’s really going to be a fun season. It is really setting up everything for the next few seasons. America is their home now.
HC: What will young women enjoy the most about The Spy Who Dumped Me?
SH: I think they’re going to love that it’s intelligent comedy. It’s not slapstick or in your face. You’ve got two really strong, intelligent women. It’s a character-driven piece. They’re a little lost and trying to find their way. It’s all dealt with with humor and they become stronger by supporting each other. And who doesn’t want to go on a road trip with these two girls?
