Selena Gomez’s New Song ‘Bad Liar’ Is Finally Here

Selena Gomez has finally released some new music, and it’s not what you would expect. The singer dropped her edgy new single “Bad Liar” right in time for summer, but it’s not the typical, bouncy pop track you normally hear this time of year.

According to Refinery29, Selena and her team were inspired by Talking Head’s 1977 jam “Psycho Killer,” specifically Tina Weymouth’s bassline on the song. Selena collaborated with Julia Michaels, an up-and-coming pop singer and fellow Talking Heads fan.

“Selena and Julia are Talking Heads-obsessed, so when we all got together in one room, Julia suggested, ‘Why don’t we just write over the bassline from ‘Psycho Killer?’ and we were all going, ‘That sounds great!’” songwriter Justin Tranter explains to Variety.

The familiar beat bumps in the background as Selena describes the oh-so-relatable moment of catching feelings when you really don’t want to. “I see how your attention builds/It’s like looking in a mirror/Your touch like a happy pill/But still all we do is fear/What could possibly happen next?/Can we focus on the love?” she sings. Could the lyrics be hinting at her current relationship with The Weeknd, AKA her friend Bella Hadid’s ex-beau?

Whether or not the tune has some underlying meaning, it’s a major hint as to what the rest of Selena’s upcoming album will sound like.

“Selena is where she always is, ahead of the f—ing curve
” Tranter continues. “The music is very sexy, very smart and right where we left off the last time.”

Fans can catch the dramatic music video exclusively on Spotify.
