The beginning of December was once recognized specifically for the start of Freeform’s 25 Days of Christmas and that one last push before final rolled around, but it’s recently taken on a new importance as the time of year where we all obsess over our Spotify Wrapped playlists. This affair, reserved for Spotify users and Spotify users only (sorry, Apple Music fans!), is an expedition into the artists, songs, genres and podcasts we consumed over the past year.
Reviewing our Spotify Wrapped can lead to some surprising results (really? I listened to “Someone You Loved” by Lewis Capaldi 67 times this year?) and some not so surprising top listens (I’m looking at you, Swifties). Although we all have different music tastes, it’s safe to say that there were a select few artists who really carried Spotify Wrapped this year. With Lil Nas X’s Montero, Olivia Rodrigo’s Sour, and any and all things Taylor Swift dominating the headlines, it’s no surprise that most of us found them in our top artists of the year. Other favorites included Billie Eilish, Machine Gun Kelly, The Driver Era, and Doja Cat, proving that no matter how eclectic we claim our music taste to be, nobody can resist tuning into the Top 50 once in a while.
With so much amazing music at our fingertips, it’s impossible to whittle it all down into a single playlist, but we’ve done that anyway. Sure, it’s a little all over the place, but so was 2021, and no matter where you lie on the musical spectrum, there’s something here for everyone to enjoy.
