A few weeks ago, Broadcast Music Inc. announced that this year, they would be honoring Taylor Swift and all her musical achievements with a brand new award, fittingly titled The Taylor Swift Award. Considering that the only other time a BMI award was named after a musical icon was back in 1990 (for Michael Jackson), we think this is a huge deal for Taylor. “Taylor Swift has transformed pop culture through her songs, artistry and indomitable spirit,” said Barbara Cane, the Vice President of Writer/Publisher Relations. “She has had a profound impact, not only musically, but also through her personal conviction and commitment to create a standard that values and respects music for everyone. We felt it appropriate to award Taylor with an honor that is as unique and special as she is.”
Two nights ago, Taylor took the stage at the 64th annual BMI awards to accept The Taylor Swift Award. In a video posted on Instagram, Tay showed a snippet of her acceptance speech, which was exactly what you’d expect from the 1989 singer.
“I’m really super relieved that BMI decided to give me The Taylor Swift Award, because if they had [chosen] somebody else to give The Taylor Swift Award to, I’d be, like, kind of bummed about it,” she said.
There are plenty of musicians slaying the charts right now, but let’s be honest—Taylor Swift is on another level altogther. The fact that she was the highest-earning entertainer last year is just proof of her continued success and awesomeness. Keep on killin’ it, Taylor.
