Ohio State Police got the workout of a year after chasing a reckless driver on the highway for an hour. The kicker? The driver was only ten years old. According to the Washington Post, Ohio police received a phone call from a distraught mother 8:30 a.m. Thursday morning.
“My 10-year-old stole his dad’s car, and he’s running from me,” she told the dispatcher.
While waiting for his sister to drop him off to school, the ten-year-old, who remains unnamed, grabbed the keys to his mother’s boyfriend’s car. After realizing what happened, the mother jumped in her car as well and started to follow her son on the busy Ohio highway. According to Cleveland.com, this was the second time within two weeks that the young boy had taken the car out for a joyride.
The chase consisted of the mother chasing her son down West 117th street, then onto Interstate 90 going west. Police intervened in the chase entering at I-80. At that point, the ten-year-old was driving 96 miles per hour. A trooper car pulled up to the boy and motioned for him to stop however the boy just shook his head and continued to drive.
According to Chicago Tribune, the chase concluded when the ten-year-old slowed down and transferred to green, flat strip of land and a trooper bumped the 2004 Toyota Avalon into a milepost sign. The chase ended at around 9:49 a.m. The ten-year-old was taken to a hospital and will be placed into the custody of Erie County Children’s Services.
