Taylor Swift has finally made her comeback with “Look What You Made Me Do,” and whether you love or hate her new single, you have to admit the music video is on-point. It’s filled with Easter eggs that even the least devoted Swifties will appreciate.
The Nils Sjoberg tombstone
For a quick second, you can see a tombstone that reads Nils Sjoberg in the graveyard. That’s the pseudonym Taylor used when she wrote Calvin Harris’s hit “This Is What You Came For.”
Taylor buries her 1989 persona
Zombie “Out of the Woods” Taylor buries 2014 Met Gala Taylor. Since “Out of the Woods” was Taylor’s last single from 1989 and the 2014 Met Gala signaled the beginning of her 1989 era, Taylor is saying that version of herself is dead and gone.
A dig at Katy Perry or the Grammys?
There’s debate over what the scene of Taylor crashing a gold Maserati while holding a Grammy means. Some believe the hair and animal print clothes are nods to Katy Perry, and Taylor holding a Grammy is a jab at Katy because Katy’s never won the prestigious music award. Others think Taylor crashing a Maserati is a reference to Red—the title track of which featured the lyric “Loving him is like driving a new Maserati down a dead-end street”—not winning a Grammy.
Her takedown of streaming giants
Taylor references her war with streaming giants like Apple and Spotify when she robs the “Stream Co.” vault.
Squad factory
If you think all of Taylor’s squad members look alike, that’s because she manufactures them in a creepy warehouse. JK. But the rows of eerily identical, robot-like figures in this shot acknowledge criticism of Taylor’s friends looking like carbon copies of one another.
The “I heart T.S.” tank
Of course Tom Hiddleston’s iconic “I heart T.S.” tank had to make an appearance in this video. It’s just too good to pass up.
Long list of ex-lovers
Taylor is known for her long list of high-profile exes, and the eight men that stand behind her in this scene represent eight of the relationships she’s had while in the spotlight: Joe Jonas, John Mayer, Taylor Lautner, Jake Gyllenhaal, Conor Kennedy, Harry Styles, Calvin Harris and Tom Hiddleston.
All the old Taylor Swifts
Taylor Swift has taken on many identities since she first blew up. Just some of the old Taylors she claims are now dead include “You Belong With Me” Taylor, Red tour Taylor, 2015 Billboard Music Awards Taylor, Taylor Swift Award Taylor, “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” Taylor, “Shake It Off” Taylor and country Taylor.
Squad tee
Taylor updated her “You Belong With Me” video T-shirt to include the names of her fave squad members. Some notable mentions? Blake and Ryan, Lena, Ed and Selena.
This treasure trove of goodies
The end of the “LWYMMD” video is filled with Easter eggs. You’ve got jabs at Taylor’s surprised face and the accusation that she’s always playing the victim. One Taylor tells another not to call her a bitch. A selfie-obsessed Taylor talks about getting receipts. And 2009 VMAs Taylor says she’d like to be excluded from this narrative. CLASSIC.
