While we barely got two minutes of clips, I’m so far sold on Station 19.
It’s got everything you would expect from a Grey’s Anatomy spinoff; an overbearing father figure, a strong-jawed, pretty-eyed male co-lead (who I’m officially dubbing McSmolder (Grey Damon)), illicit workplace hookups, and, of course, poorly-timed interruptions.
Oh, wait, I think I’m forgetting something…. Did I mention an overwhelming flair for the dramatics? Because, duh.
In what I’m guessing is going to be Ben’s first official fire, one of the firefighters loses track of their captain (Miguel Sandoval), who they find pulseless amid smoke and flames. The crew harnesses themselves up, grabs a hold of their captain, and synchronously throw themselves through the glass of the windows of the fifth or so floor. Of course, this stunt wouldn’t be complete without flames billowing out in their wake, and a wide-cut shot of them falling slowly down the side of the building.
I bet you can guess where they take him, right?
Meredith takes Andy (played by Jaina Lee Ortiz), the captain’s daughter, under her wing, ushering her into a supply closet to have her moment of weakness away from prying eyes in a scene which is likely from the upcoming backdoor pilot, an as of yet unnamed Grey’s episode set to air sometime in March.
When her father resigns from his hospital bed, Andy immediately puts her name in for his replacement. Given that she’s a young woman in a male-dominated field, you might expect a lot of pushback. Instead, you get her voiceover saying “I know I can lead” and a clip of one of her colleagues saying, “You’re about as badass as they come…” Can I get an amen?! (So far) no suggestions of nepotism, just pure acknowledgement of something that she’s been working towards her whole life. This is what I’m here for.
Of course it wouldn’t be a true Shonda show without moments of, sometimes inopportune, comic relief. In the aftermath of a house fire, a trio of firefighters is sifting through the wreckage. They overturn a hunk of debris to reveal a dog, to which one claims, “Dibs on the puppy!”
“You can’t call dibs on the puppy!” one argues back.
“I just did,” he shrugs. Obviously, this childish argument had me choking on laughter.
And in the end, falling nicely in line with the theme of loving what you do in tonight’s Grey’s “(Don’t Fear) the Reaper,” Andy says, “I do this job because I love it… every fire put out, every life saved… Station 19 is where we choose to be.”
Station 19 premieres March 22 during TGIT, and you can watch the trailer for yourself here.
