For those of us who don’t have the credibility or fame to attend in person, the first Monday of May is a time when we collectively gather on Twitter to get a glimpse at the luxury and fashion of our favorite stars at The Met Gala.
This year’s theme was announced to honor the legacy of German fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld, notable for being the fashion director of Chanel and essentially helping modernize the fashion house and keep its foot in the world of clothing.
When thinking about other male fashion icons, it’s hard to ignore the rounds Harry Styles’s name has been making. While he has not achieved official fashion icon status, his androgynous and feminine looks have received both praise and criticism — especially after Vogue chose Styles for their December 2020 cover and styled him in a Gucci dress. Following in the footsteps of the likes of David Bowie and Prince, Styles has received attention for pushing the boundaries of style for men.Â
So, with the first Monday of May just a few days away, I’m not alone in speculating what exciting fit Style will wear at the 2023 Met Gala… or if he’s attending at all. There are reportedly rumors of Anna Wintour cutting down the guest list, specifically not inviting the Kardashians, who finally attended as a full family in 2022. The possibility of a shorter guest list means it’s anyone’s guess who is considered worthy of an invite.Â
Harry Styles attended the Met Gala for the first time in 2019. This was the year of the infamous theme “Camp: Notes on Fashion,” which gave us several looks of celebs missing the mark or not quite understanding the theme. Â
While Styles was one of such celebs to not serve camp, his feminine Gucci look featured a pearl and bow, which would foreshadow the rise of these accessories in the following years.Â
Styles was actually selected to co-chair the 2019 event alongside permanent co-chairs Anna Wintour, as well as Serena Williams, Alessandro Michele, and Lady Gaga. Co-chairs work to establish the vibe and atmosphere of the theme by assisting in curating the menu, guest list, and decor and, of course, hosting!Â
2020 did not see a Met Gala due to the pandemic, and the 2021 Met Gala would occur without Styles due to his Love On Tour which would put him in Houston on the day of the event. This led fans to wonder what the Englishman’s take on “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion” would have been.
However, fans were confused when Styles was not in attendance at the 2022 Met Gala. At this time, the news of his dating director Olivia Wilde was not new but still had everyone swirling to get any insight they could on the private couple that had been together since around January of 2021.Â
Sources would eventually confirm their breakup in November of 2022, sparking discourse as the Internet was notably unkind to Wilde following the drama of her split from actor Jason Sudeikis and her film Don’t Worry Darling.Â
Now, fans are eager to see if Style will make what will only be his second appearance at the Met Gala. Some have claimed he will not, but nothing is set in stone. Fingers crossed, we will receive another fun, possibly colorful look from the performer this May.
