After a year-long wait, the third and final season of Young Royals is finally here! Season 3 premiered on March 11 and the first 5 episodes didn’t disappoint. Warning: Spoilers for Young Royals Season 3 follow. Aside from Simon and Wilhelm dealing with the aftermath of their leaked sex tape and August fully embracing his brand of Augustness, we also saw Sara distance herself from her family and friends and a full-on protest at Hillerska over the school’s new rules.
But the biggest moment that happened this season was at the end of episode 5 when Simon appeared to break up with Wilhelm. If that scene caused a roller coaster of emotions and you want a full breakdown ahead of the series finale, I’ve got you.
Those who’ve been watching Young Royals since the beginning know about all of the ups and downs Wilmon has gone through since they fell in love. After breaking up in Season 1, the pair get back together in Season 2 while dealing with the aftermath of being outed by August.
But despite the scandal, the pair stayed together and kicked off Season 3 happier than ever. However, Wilhelm and Simon dealt with some issues throughout the season, and by episode 5, Simon realized that he and the Crown Prince probably aren’t meant to be together. But I’m getting way ahead of myself. Let’s start from the beginning of Season 3.
Back at Hillerska, Wilhelm and Simon try their best to move on from all of the drama their sex scandal caused by avoiding August and Sara, who reported August to the police in Season 2. As the season goes on, Simon finds himself dealing with online hate because of his relationship with Wilhelm.
After Simon uploaded a video singing about the bullying he’s faced online, Wilhelm asked him to take it down out of fear of Simon getting “a lot of crap for it.” Although Simon didn’t see a problem with standing up for their love, Wilhelm wanted to keep their relationship private.
Simon later confided in Wilhelm over the negative comments he’d been receiving online, but the prince did somewhat of an “I told you so” move by brushing off Simon’s feelings and telling him not to get worked up over the negativity.
Simon goes on to take a break from social media, but while selling raffle tickets at an event, he takes a photo with a mother her her young son, which he later uploads. The photo was super cute, but Wilhelm wasn’t a fan of it since a banner that read “Crush The Upper Class” was visible in the background.
The photo didn’t sit well with a lot of people and Simon soon found a rock thrown through his and even started getting hassled at Hillerska for being a “communist.” However, Simon didn’t let these things stop him from standing up for what he believed in.
When Wilhelm asked if he was really against the monarchy, Simon confessed that he was against the system. With Wilhelm being part of the royal family, he doesn’t see a problem with the monarchy but Simon stands his ground in his belief that Sweden isn’t unified.
After this, Simon and Wilhelm’s relationship becomes a bit strained. Wilhelm then distanced himself from Simon when he learned from August that his older brother Erik was part of a hazing ritual at Hillerska. Although Simon tried to be there for Wilhelm, he began to feel like everything he did was wrong. Simon’s mother reminds him that he’s a great person and that love shouldn’t be hard when you’re young.
At the end of episode 5, Simon attends a quaint 17th birthday celebration for Wilhelm at the palace. Following a heated conversation with his parents, Wilhelm knocks over his gifts and retreats to his room. Later that night, Wilhelm apologized to Simon for his actions. Although Simon understood that Wilhelm was hurting, he felt that the Crown Prince had turned into another person whom he didn’t recognize.
“Love shouldn’t be this hard,” Simon said. “Maybe it just can’t work. I can’t do this anymore.”
Is this really the end of Wilmon? I sure hope it isn’t but we’ll have to wait until Netflix drops episode 6 to see if these two stay together or break up for good.
