A Florida woman was put in jail last Tuesday for faking her own kidnapping. The worst part? She did it for a guy’s attention.
On September 10, Janet Elena Brooks reported to the police that she was walking through the parking lot of an apartment complex when she was abducted by a man at gunpoint who forced her into the trunk of his car and then dropped her off at a dog park, according to the Daily Commercial.
But when police pulled up surveillance footage of the area from that day, they saw her leaving the parking lot and walking towards the road, the Palm Beach Post reports.
When confronted, the Daily Commercial said Brooks confessed to fabricating the story to get her boyfriend’s attention. Apparently, she suspected that another woman was interested in her boyfriend and decided that faking abduction was the best way “to see if he truly cared about her,” according to police. In reality, she just took a trip to the store and a friend later dropped her off at the dog park.
She was charged with filing a false report with law enforcement and was released from the Lake County Jail after posting a $2,000 bond. So, don’t lie to the police to get a romantic interest to pay attention—it’s really not worth $2,000. Or the embarrassment.
