Despite being a writer whose thoughts can be found all over the internet, I’m a pretty private person, and there’s quite a lot the world doesn’t know about me. But I find that, sometimes, gradually revealing information in small doses can be somewhat enjoyable. In the “You Don’t Know” TikTok trend, characterized by a viral audio clip that opens with, “there’s so much you don’t know about me,” creators are sharing little details about themselves, and the result is gold.
The hashtag #YouDon’tKnow currently has 234.8 million views on TikTok, and it’s clear why creators have quickly hopped on this trend. The dialogue featured in the original audio is entirely too dramatic to be taken seriously, and of course, TikTokers are using this to their advantage.
If you come across the trend on your FYP, you’ll hear the following conversation between two people:
“There’s so much you don’t know about me.”
“Like what, are you like…an ax murderer?”
“Worse.”
“What?”
“…I’m a gamer.”
This dialogue, by the way, is not satire. The audio comes from a scene in Good Luck Have Fun, a show produced by Brat TV about a group of gamers. The character speaking in the scene, Jane, is played by YouTuber Vereena Sayed, who was formerly part of the House of Finesse. She reveals to another character that she is — gasp — a gamer. And while Vereena has gone viral for her popular makeup tutorials in the past, I’m not sure she imagined going viral on TikTok for this particular scene, in which the dialogue and soap opera-style music is so melodramatic that TikTokers literally thought it was a joke.
In the “You Don’t Know” TikTok trend, creators are using the original sound from Brat TV to dramatically share their own secrets, most of which are delightfully random. The goal: simply lip dub the conversation in the audio, then, when Jane says “I’m a gamer,” reveal your own secret. Did you low-key put ketchup on your spaghetti as a kid? Time to get it off your chest. Do you secretly wear socks to bed? Fess up. I especially love Hayley O’Neill’s version of the trend where she records both halves of the conversation while spinning around in a chair. I also believe it should be the blueprint for this trend moving forward.
As you’ve likely caught onto already, the “You Don’t Know” TikTok trend is meant to be ridiculous, just like the original reveal that Jane is a gamer (is there anything more shocking?). I recommend checking out a few examples before trying it on your own, but know that the trend is pretty straightforward to execute, and leaves lots of room for creativity. Take this example from @domenic.arrabit, who comically reveals he’s a “horse girl,” or this one from @kashyathomas, who admits to always watching Netflix with the subtitles on. Whether you’re ready to confess that you don’t like sushi or that you were secretly a child actor, the “You Don’t Know” TikTok trend is ready to help you speak up. So grab the trending audio here, and go ahead. Tell me something I don’t know.
