When Gilmore Girls creator Amy Sherman-Palladino and executive producer Daniel Palladino blessed us with a revival last year, fans figured they’d be seeing a lot more of Lorelai and Rory Gilmore. At the very least, they expected more than four episodes that left too many unanswered questions at their end.
Sadly, the fate of Stars Hollow might be in jeopardy now that the husband-wife duo have signed a multi-year deal with Amazon Studios to do two seasons of their period drama, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, as well as develop other new series for the streaming platform.
Amazon picked up The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel after the pilot drew great reviews. While Joe Lewis, Head of Comedy, Drama and VR, Amazon Studios, called the Palladinos “brilliant” and “wonderfully funny,” Amy and Daniel said in a statement, “Amazon is the future of television and we are thrilled to tag along for the ride.”
The partnership may do wonders for Amazon, but it leaves Gilmore fans more confused than ever. What does Rory’s future hold? Who’s her baby daddy? Is she going to be a single mother like Lorelai? Are the “final four words” really the last words that will be spoken between the Gilmores?
Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos previously alluded to the possibility of more episodes. And, even better, TVLine reports the Palladinos’ contract with Amazon “includes an ‘out’ clause that would allow the pair to spearhead a follow-up to last year’s Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life for Netflix.” It’s no guarantee, but it’s certainly an option!
With the show’s executive producers and so many of the main cast moving on to other projects, we may be waiting another nine years, six months, and 10 days to see the Gilmores again. But at least all hope is not lost.
