8 Women Leading The Change In College Sustainability

This is a sponsored feature. All opinions are 100% from Her Campus.

It’s Earth Day, and we’re celebrating our one-of-a-kind planet by spotlighting the one-of-a-kind leaders on campus making serious sustainability strides. We’re dedicated to making environmentally conscious decisions here at HC HQ—we even have our own sustainability committee—so it was a no-brainer for us to partner with organic bed and bath brand, Under the Canopy and Bed Bath & Beyond to celebrate our favorite ~green~ college women.

Sierra Warshawsky, Freshman at University of the Arts London, London College of Fashion

Sierra is a leader of several environmental groups on her campus, including the Sustainability Working Group and Centre for Sustainable Fashion at the London College of Fashion.

Emily Laage, Junior at Purdue University

Emily is so focused on sustainability that she made it her major. She’s currently studying abroad in Canada for a year-long sustainability education program in Halifax, and has been conducting research across the city—surveying city businesses, industry associations and waste management services for inputs and outputs to their production.

Shatoyia Jones, Senior at Amherst College

Shatoyia founded her own foundation, the First Ladies of Poverty Foundation, to create programming, grants, scholarships and events that help to alleviate poverty through basic needs programming and sustainability while empowering women of color and allies.

Abi Rasch, Sophomore at University of South Carolina

Abigail is a Sustainable Carolina intern at the University of South Carolina where she works to educate students, faculty and staff about sustainability through Green Office and Green Event Certification in order to create a culture of sustainability on campus.

Calista Tee, Junior at University of California, Davis

Working on sustainability from the tech side, Calista is part of a San Francisco-based team working on a web app that serves as a guide to eating more plant-based food to reduce food waste and subsequent  carbon emissions.

Zoe Allen, Second Year at University of Exeter

Zoe is a founding editor for her own column at Her Campus Exeter: 3 Changes a Week. Here, she writes a weekly column asking readers to make three small changes that would reduce their environmental footprint. Her advice is making waves on campus, and she’s currently founding Exeter’s first ever Green Earth Society.

Abigail Franks, Junior at the University of Alabama at Birmingham

After discovering the lack of renewable energy resources in her home state of Alabama, Abigail created WEARE (We Envision Alabamian Renewable Energy). Through this organization, Abigail and her colleagues educate  Alabamians about the importance of renewable energy and sustainability. WEARE also helps citizens register to vote and assists with political campaigns for candidates who prioritize solar energy.

Yasmine Duran, Junior at Loyola University Chicago

Yasmine is making waves on the style side of sustainability. As a representative for Rent the Runway on campus, she aims to educate her peers about fast fashion’s environmental footprint.
