“Speak up, no one can hear you.” Naturally soft-spoken people are no strangers to this line. In fact, we expect it. We don’t speak softly on purpose; however, our voices are simple at a lower level than most. This means our closest friends have become expert listeners. It wouldn’t come as a surprise if they had acquired super hearing by now. If you’re one of the naturally soft-spoken, chances are you’ll be able to relate to this list. From not being taken seriously to every day embarrassment, the daily struggles are indeed real.
1. Speaking in front of a large group
You have to consistently remember to raise your voice and keep it that way throughout the entire presentation. Don’t worry, if you forget, someone will be there to remind you. Every. Single. Time.
2. Being asked to speak up before you’ve even opened your mouth
This is just plain awkward. Please don’t make assumptions. At least wait for me to open my mouth first.
3. People assume you’re automatically a doormat
Just because we don’t have loud, booming voices that attract the attention of a room, doesn’t mean we can’t command attention in other ways. It also doesn’t mean we won’t speak up if you attempt to walk all over us. The volume of your voice does not equate to meekness.
4. “You’re, like, the quietest person I’ve ever met”
People seem to view you as this super gentle creature, like a unicorn. You just smile, nod and imagine giving them a nice slap in the face.
5. In your head, you sound perfectly normal
6. You’re constantly being told to raise your voice
Don’t you think we would turn up the volume if we could? It’s not our fault our voices are naturally low.
7. Losing your voice is a common occurrence
The more you talk, the more of an issue this becomes. This is where a water bottle comes in handy.
8. Getting asked, “Is that really as loud as you can yell?”
I didn’t realize I was being judged on the volume of my scream.
