In case you haven’t already heard, it’s not quite the time to put away your Gryffindor robes, Olivander wands and thunderbolt scar tattoos. We weren’t too focused on any sort of bad luck last Friday the 13th as Warner Bros. studio delivered the best piece of film news: There’s going to be another Harry Potter movie.
Well, this Warner Bros. project won’t be a typical Harry Potter film as the young wizard will be absent. But the movie will take us back to Harry Potter’s magical universe, or more specifically into his Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them textbook. So bring on the dragons, pixies and snorkacks as Warner Bros. journeys on through the wonderful world of Harry Potter once again!
Just when you thought the news couldn’t get any better, Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling then came forward and announced that she would be writing the film’s screenplay. In an interview, Rowling recounted how Warner Bros. had approached her to obtain the rights for a Fantastic Beasts film, and that the author then decided to sign on because of her attachment to the Harry Potter universe.
“The idea of seeing Newt Scamander, the supposed author of Fantastic Beasts, realised by another writer was difficult. Having lived for so long in my fictional universe, I feel very protective of it,” said Rowling. “As I considered Warners’ proposal, an idea took shape that I couldn’t dislodge. That is how I ended up pitching my own idea for a film to Warner Bros.”
The movie will revolve around Newt Scamander, the textbook’s author, as he journeys around the world documenting every magical beast. Rowling has confirmed that the film will serve as an extension of the Harry Potter film series, not as a prequel or a sequel. But even though we won’t be seeing our beloved wizard Harry and his friends, it’s safe to say that more than enough of us will still make the trek to a theater just to see Fantastic Beasts come to life. More than a few Harry Potter cast members share our sentiments as well, with a handful imploring Rowling to include them in the film’s production.
If all goes well, maybe we’ll even have a Quidditch Through the Ages to enjoy in a few years as well. Please, Warner Bros., please?
