For most Collegiettes, July means fun in the sun, more time with friends, or the chance to simply unwind (finally!). Why not do these while also doing something good for your community? According to the 2012 National Survey on Young People and Volunteering, 93% of teens in the U.S. want to volunteer. Yet, only 22% of them actively do. Which begs the question: why not?! It turns out the number one reason was simply that no one asked them to! Luckily, HC partnered with DoSomething.org a long time ago to spread the volunteer love.
Brittany (HC’s Manger of Campus Development) and I will be volunteering today as part of DoSomething.org and our bestie Bing’s Summer of Doing program. The important initiative seeks to activate young people in Los Angeles, Atlanta, and New York by engaging them with their community. Our final Bing party was last night (it was a lot of fun!!), and now we are thrilled to be teaming up with two of our favorite partners today on this project. We’ll be volunteering at the Jacob H. Schiff Park in Harlem where we will help keep the CITYarts’ Pieces for Peace Mosaic sparkling. This amazing mosaic stretches 613 feet and includes artwork from students around the world, as a way to build bridges across cultural gaps. Sounds amazing, right? Well then you should join in on the fun!
DoSomething.org has teamed up with Bing and Lenovo, launching “The Hunt: 11 Days of Doing”, a way to have fun volunteering and get rewarded for doing so! The Hunt includes 11 days of challenges for 11 causes. Starting today, July 10th, participants will receive a new series of challenges focused on a specific cause daily. Participants can work together as teams to complete the challenges and report back to show how they created measurable impact in their community. But wait, there’s more! Each day one lucky participant will win a brand new Lenovo Ultrabook!! The final winning team will even receive a free trip to the Do Something Awards in Los Angeles!
This is a fabulous opportunity and a fun way to give back. To sign up, you can log on to www.dosomething.org/hunt or text “HUNT” to 38383. But your volunteering should not stop here! Next time you get the inkling to volunteer don’t wait until someone asks you to — we already did! ;)
