What Your Major Should Be, Based On Your Myers-Briggs Type

With the spring semester slowly approaching (wild, I know), some of you might start to consider what your major should be in college. And honestly, declaring your college major is no easy task. While you can always change your mind — and there’s absolutely no shame in doing so — for some reason, the stakes feel incredibly high. Just remember, in no way does your major determine your future. And if you’re worried that you still don’t know what direction you want to take, you have more than enough time to sort things out.

One concern many of you might face when deciding on a major might be that you still haven’t found your calling. Some people might know before they even get to campus that they’ll be a STEM major, while others might be juggling their options up until junior year of college. In my opinion, the best way to evaluate what major is right for you is to determine how well they suit your personality. For example, as a creative thinker (and a horrible test-taker), I immediately eliminated calculus from my realm of possibilities. When choosing a major, you should recognize your strengths and play to them. And what better way to discover your strengths than by taking the Myers-Briggs test?

Everyone fits one of the sixteen personality types — and in under 30 minutes, the test will tell you yours. While your personality is more complex than an arrangement of four letters, the Myers-Briggs assessment might reveal something about yourself that you never realized — and hopefully, that “something” is a potential college major.

INFJ (The Advocate): Creative Writing Major

As an INFJ myself, I may be biased in starting with this MBTI personality. And, as a creative writing major, I might also be projecting when I say that it’s a perfect fit for this imaginative, idealistic personality type.

ENFJ (The Protagonist): Education Major

Empathetic and a natural-born leader, you would be everyone’s dream kindergarten teacher. So why not give an early education major a try?

INFP (The Mediator): Music or Dance Major

You live in your daydreams, and I love you for that. INFPS are all about creating, which is why I recommend a music or dance major for you.

ENFP (The Campaigner): Exercise Science Major

ENFPs are the golden retrievers of the Myers-Briggs types: warm, friendly, and bursting with enthusiasm. Channel your energy into an exercise science major.

INTP (The Logician): Architecture Major

Hey, smarty-pants. Your deep-thinking and precision is sure to help you succeed as an architecture major.

ENTP (The Debater): Political Science Major

You’re both a fighter and a visionary. With your innovative and argumentative attitude, you were born to major in political science.

INTJ (The Architect): Sociology Major

You probably thought you would get the architecture major, didn’t you? Passionate and tenacious, you should consider majoring in sociology.

ENTJ (The Commander): Business Major

You know what you want and will do whatever it takes to achieve it. A business major would totally suit you well.

ISTJ (The Investigator): Neuroscience Major

If a GPA can exceed a 4.0, ISTJs probably have it. Think about declaring a neuroscience major, since you’re so brainy.

ESTJ (The Executive): Economics Major

As an ESTJ, you probably prefer the finer things in life. Your analytical and meticulous personality screams “econ major” to me.

ISFJ (The Defender): Psychology Major

Chances are, you’re the therapist of your friend group. The psychology department needs someone as understanding and loyal as you are.

ESFJ (The Caregiver): Communications Major

Some might call you “chatty,” but I would call you “personable.” You have a hunger to meet new people and make connections — a  communications major would fulfill your needs.

ISFP (The Adventurer): Foreign Languages or Geography Major

With a title like “the adventurer,” your main goal in life is to see the world. I could see you either following a path in foreign languages or geography.

ESFP (The Entertainer): Theater Major

Would you be surprised if I gave you “theater major”? You are “the entertainer,” after all.

ISTP (The Virtuoso): Studio Arts Major

Though you might have a prickly exterior, deep down, you’re sensitive and spontaneous. A studio arts major is right up your alley, bestie.

ESTP (The Entrepreneur): Statistics Major

As an ESTP, you’re probably a person of action. Apply your resourcefulness and problem-solving abilities to a major in statistics.
